My favorite of the those is my Bryn Mawr Quiddich Team bag (Bryn Mawr is my alma mater). For small projects like socks and mittens, I use the nice draw string bags you get at the Apple store. They are exactly the right size to hold a sock in progress, the yarn needed and a folded pattern.
