citron anyone?

Happy Friday everyone! I was hoping for a little advice today! My friend's birthday is coming up and I would like to knit her the exquisite Citron. Ever since the Winter 2009 issue of Knitty came out I have been stalking this pattern! I look at it probably two or three times a day! I'm not kidding. Why have I been stalling, you ask?

Well, here is my dilemma.... I would like to make one for my sweet friend (who I will not mention for obvious reasons), and one for ME!! I don't usually knit for myself, but I am really, really crushin' on this shawlette. This sensation could be lost after I knit it once, but let's assume this love affair does not wear off right away. My dilemma is that I have purchased two skeins of Malabrigo lace for this project (that I am planning to knit twice), but I don't know which color I should knit for who. The Water Green is OHHHHHH SOOOOOO pretty and refreshing, but I think both my friend and I would probably wear the Black more. Both of us would look nice in the Water Green, but the Black is so classic for such a sweet shawlette. My oh my, the woes of knitting... what am I to do?

Sincerely looking for advice,

-Ve

I think the lighter color is so perfect for spring and summer. It is a refreshing cool color. While black is classic, it can look a bit dark and brooding on a spring or summer day.

You could knit them both and let her choose.

If the black would look better on your friend than the green, knit her the black.

PS I am distraught that your yarn giveaways are only for the US! You would think that in New Zealand, with 4 million people and 40 million sheep, that we would be awash with fabulous wool. Alas, much of the best stuff goes offshore as our "market" is so small.

I agree with the Knitting Gnome: knit both and let her choose. That way, you won't have the possibility of a situation where she sees you wearing the other one and silently wishes she had it!

Both are beautiful, but beware--I am five rows from the finish and ran out of yarn!! The pattern is lovely, but I don't think there will be any yarn to spare!!

I would definitely keep the light green for myself. It's just so fresh and perfect, and I think I'd get more wear out of a colour since most of my CLOTHES are black :)

Could you some how incorporate both yarns into the Citron pattern. Maybe have the ruffle on the end be one color and the main body be the other color and then reverse for the second one? Not sure of the pattern construction but just an idea.

Make the main part in green, and then edge it with the darker color.

I would pick the green for myself, but that's because green is my favorite color. I would either let her choose or just knit her the black since it is a neutral color.

I'm in the "knit both and let her pick one" camp. Especially since you enjoy either. :-)

they're both going to end up gorgeous, so no matter what your friend will love it. i think if it was me, i would give away the green one - that color just seems spot on for this time of year.

Buy some more black and make two black shawls! :)

I agree with the idea of knitting them both and letting her choose!

I'm a list person, so I say make a list of pros and cons:
Who's wardrobe compliments the black/green better?
Who's complexion would be complimented by the black/green better?

And if that doesn't help I have two more suggestions. Knit both the black and green for yourself and then let your friend pick out a color of yarn that you haven't bought yet and knit a third one. Or even better, don't knit any of them and give the yarn away to us!

hmmm, you said they would both look good on each of you, but who wears more of what colors that the green would go with? If you rarely knit for yourself i would stay festive and present her with the green and keep the black for yourself.

I'd say knit the black first - and if you really feel she'll like it better - send that one to your friend, it'll ensure she wears it and you'll look beautiful in the green!

I say knit the black as it is a classic color that will fit most any outfits; if she's that good a friend that you're knitting for her, you can always borrow it back to wear for your special occasion, or buy another skein of black to knit for yourself later.

Hi Ve,
whoever ;) your friend is, I'd let her choose herself. Even though you mentioned that the colors would suit both of you, I think that the lighter green would really suit you, because of your dark hair! Happy knitting. I really like the pattern.

I have to go with the green. I love anything knitted in green. It is one of my favorite yarn colors! Maybe you should knit both and then decide which you prefer. Good luck with the choice!

I think it depends on your (and her) coloring. Granted, everyone can pull off black - it's so classic and universal. Doesn't matter if you are a blonde, brunette or redhead. But the water green? I think that there are some that that color would wash out on. The water green (seems to me) would look better on a blonde or redhead - someone with lighter skin that wears pastels well. Beautiful color, the water green.
