Congratulations! Please contact me at yarnonthehouse@gmail.com to collect your prizes.

On this edition of YOTH we have a tremendously talented young man by the name of Stephen West aka West Knits. I had the absolute pleasure to meet Stephen back during the beginning of the year when I took a fun shawl techniques class that he was hosting while passing through my neck of the woods. Stephen just recently moved to Amsterdam and he was more than willing to come be a guest on the blog and do a Skype interview for us this week. Take a look...

Links and such from the videos:

- Our DELIGHTFUL yarn sponsor this week is: Hedgehog Fibres

- West Knits brand spankin' new site!

- Stephen West on Ravelry

- West Knits Book One collection

- Pogona pattern

- Flamboyan pattern

- A Verb for Keeping Warm - Blue Whale Shawl (not available until April for non-members)

- Amsterdam

- Knitting Brioche by Nancy Marchant

Thank you Stephen for visiting us here on YOTH! Come back soon. I also want to give a big thanks to our wonderful yarn sponsor this week: Hedgehog Fibres!

One of the beautiful new designs in the West Knits Book One collection is a pattern called Pogona, and the beautiful orange and green samples shown on the Ravelry pattern page are both knit up out of one skein of the fantastic Hedgehog Fibres Merino/Cashmere.

So, guess what I have for you this week!!

Yes, take a closer look! YOU know you wanna reach through the screen and give them a squeeze!

Two very lucky followers have the chance to each win one of the skeins of Merino/Cashmere shown above and the ENTIRE West Knits Book One collection in PDF format, which includes the oh-so-lovely Pogona shawl pattern! That's not all! Two runners up will also receive the chance to win a PDF pattern of their choice from Stephen's new collection as well.

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.

2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 10/31/10. Stephen asks,"Is there a place or time where you would never consider knitting?"

Stephen's answer: I always have a knitting project (or four) with me and I often knit in public, but I would never knit during a yoga or dance class. I am well known for my ability to sweat. :)

Ve's answer: I'd never consider knitting while I am swimming. I usually knit with wool and my items would probably end up felting, and I'm good at multi-tasking but I don't think I'm that good!

I'll randomly pick the winners on Sunday and post the results on Monday along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

Ve

I think I would choose to knit in a chair overlooking the pool over swimming--can't think of too much that I would rather do other than knit, really. I hate that it's so difficult to knit in the dark--those lighted needles are acrylic, and acrylic just isn't kind to non-acrylic fibers, which is what I knit with most of the time. I'll rent a movie so that I can knit versus having to put down the knitting when the lights go out in the theatre.

LOVE the autumny colors of those skeins!

hmm...this reminds me a little of green eggs & ham...i would knit in a boat, i would knit in a moat. i would knit on a train, i would knit in the rain....but i would not knit in a car...i get motion sick :-(

I am in nursing school and no knitting allowed during class. I knit everywhere else.
Great prizes! Hope I win!

For a while, all my colleagues knit, so our meetings would always include knitting and a lunch break at a lys. Then one resigned, and a man was hired - end of knitting at meetings. Bummer! I love West's designs. Finished a Boneyard and am now on the lace for a Little Colonnade. Would love to have the collection!

I don't knit when I'm in a group with my Deaf friends. If there are needles in my hands, I can't use my hands for signing/talking.

I LOVE Stephen West's work! I would never knit in church...not that I haven't thought about it!

cmflame said...

I don't knit at work (I teach preschool) & I wouldn't knit at a formal occasion like a wedding or a funeral - unless it was a knitter's!

Unknown said...

I mostly crochet, but I wouldn't consider doing either while out to dinner or a movie with my husband...

I would never knit in a hookah lounge! While the atmosphere might be relaxing, the FO would smell like candy-flavored smoke... ;)

Hmm, I think I would never knit in church during a service. While it wouldn't bother me in the least, I would be afraid to distract others.

Beautiful yarn! Great giveaway!

I just found your blog after following a Ravelry link. What fun!
while I could, I wouldn't knit at a wedding, a funeral, a formal dinner or at the symphony, ballet or live theater. I think it would be rude and disrespectful. I couldn't knit while driving, skiing or sailing in a storm. I live on a boat and regularly knit while sailing in calm seas.

stephanie rj said...

I don't knit and drive... but I do take public transport as much as possible so i can knit and travel! I also find that my hands get cold and stiff quickly, so though I love to knit outside I'm not much good after a few minutes of winter sports.

karen said...

I would never consider knitting in a roller coaster. I would probably drop it over the side and never find it again.

Carol said...

I have a new puppy that is into everything. I don't think pup and yarn would go together too well, so I won't knit and play with puppies at the same time.
So many good things, so few hands. ;D

Gaby said...

I love Stephen's patterns!!
I would never knitting in my children's school while I wait for them :)

Emily said...

I don't knit at work. There's always plenty of things to do, and no time for knitting.

Both of these are favorite colors of mine. What gorgeous yarn! I don't knit when I'm hiking, drawing or weaving.

Red wine and knitting just don't mix. Thanks for the opportunity.

I cannot knit while gardening or cooking - how can I get my yarn messed up!

PenelopeRose said...

Oh boy, I can't see me knitting in the tub. That has disaster written all over it. What a great giveaway!

Pavlina said...

I take my knitting pretty much everywhere, but I think I'd have hard time knitting early in the morning as I am not a morning person. Thanks for the opporunity to win! Beautiful yarn!!!

I always have a knitting project with me and will pull it out in restaurants, meetings if I think I can get away with it, waiting rooms, etc. In fact I often get a lot of knitting done with a needle sticking in me while at my doctor's (sorry for those that find that gross) but I have yet to be able to figure out how to knit and run or knit and ride my horse at the same time ;-) I do agree that knitting and swimming or yoga or dancing don't really work either. I also do not knit while I am at my second job, which happens to be cleanging horse stalls...I don't want poo and shavings in my yarn!

Rebecca Swan said...

I would love to knit in the car (when RIDING, NEVER while DRIVING), but it makes me feel sick (like reading). I've considered (numerous times) kntting in church, but don't want to a:distract or b:have people think I'm not paying attention. I would never knit in the bathroom, especially public ones, but one doesn't have much time in there anyway! Other than those, if it's not too dark or jostley, anywhere is fine!

Brenda said...

Oh, I love Stephen's designs! Clean and geometric, not too fussy.

Hope I win!

P.S. sorry I forgot to answer the question :-)
I would not knit at a play or concert or movie (because I can't knit in the dark). I think church, synagogue, funerals and weddings are out, too.

Sara said...

I would not knit at a funeral or wedding - every place else is fair game...

Beautiful yarn...great patterns

Jack said...

I'd have to say that I would never knit while out to lunch -- it's just too risky!

Barbskates said...

I think knitting on a first date would be over the line. Trust me, there are many dates on which I wish I'd brought knitting, but I don't think it'd be appreciated!

CrocheterFrmCA said...

I have to say i would never knit at work. And of course never when i am driving

Amy said...

I would not consider knitting while operating a motor vehicle. Knitting while riding in a motor vehicle is totally acceptable.

Hi, my knitting goes where I go, I think the only place I would never knit would have to be anywhere while I was out drinking.
Don't drink and knit, it's dangerous!!

Angela said...

Oooh, I love Stephen's designs! I would never knit at a funeral, or a wedding, I think.

Chris W said...

I could never knit at a funeral. That just wouldn't feel right. Thanks for the chance to win. Orange is my favorite color! Followed closely by green...

Val said...

I would never be able to knit at work, unfortunately!

Gillian said...

I had three people (randomly) tell me last week to never, ever, on any account take my knitting on a first date. (Part of me said, well, why not? If he's really interested in me he'll have to know that I knit anywhere and everywhere... but I guess the rest of me agreed with these three people) :-) Oh, and probably not in my taekwondo class either...

Jeannie said...

I try to keep my outdoor knitting to a minimum. Every time I try, I drop my yarn ball a lot and get it all dirty.

Julie said...

What a pleasure to peruse the Westknits Book. I'm in love with the Westward Hat - a definate must knit for me. The Hedgehog Fibre's is amazingly gorgeous - especially love the orange.

I wouldn't knit on a long distance run. At that time, I'm just lucky to keep putting one foot in front of the other ;-)

Elizabeth MacR said...

I would never knit while taking a bath. Too wet! Love the yarn and patterns!

I'd never knit in a setting where my full attention (and that of everyone around me) should be given to someone else. I'd think it rude if I were giving a speech and someone pulled out a big lump of modeling clay or a box of crayons and coloring book. To me knitting is no different.

I know that for some folks it's no problem to knit while listening to or watching something else, but it still gives the appearance that you consider what they are saying so unimportant that you don't have to pay attention and feel free to distract the people around you. If you do feel that way, just get up and go. Loving to knit is not an excuse to be inconsiderate.

Kristina said...

I have knit pretty much everywhere I've been in the past year. However, I don't knit WHILE doing martial arts (although I have while watching my kids do martial arts) and I would never knit at a funeral or wedding.

Christine said...

I take a knitting project with me everywhere, but I would not not knot while out to dinner with my family. I would however knit if by myself, but I wonder if my yarn would smell?

Kitten With a Whiplash said...

I would not knit if I were a judge at a bodybuilding competition. I'd drop too many stitches and get drool all over my knitting.

soxanne said...

I never knit when I'm driving.

LOVE Stephen West's designs--as does my fashion-forward, 81-year-old husband.

I would not knit at the opera, while driving, or while giving a performance review.

Carol said...

When I go to church, I often find myself very calm and quiet...I would like to knit then (but can't...I'm in church!)

Michelle B said...

I love stephen's shawls they are all so lovely!

I would also not knit when swimming or doing yoga, also I don't think I would knit at a funeral. I would like to knit at staff meetings at work but it's frowned upon so no knitting there for me either

Angele said...

Stephen's designs are beautiful!!

I would never knit during a wind storm, my yarn would fly all over the place and it would drive me nuts :)

SovereignCrux said...

Where I would never knit: The bathroom. It's bad enough my kitties need to climb on or over me to the sink while I pee, I can't imagine trying to knit at the same time, too. Just too much risk involved with a litterbox nearby. lol

I knit in meetings and while in class, I knit while sitting in the grass. I knit it waiting rooms and in the car, I knit in places both near and far. I have knit on a plane, and on a bus. I have knit while sitting next to a dog named Gus.

However,
I would not could not in the pool, I would not could not while I drool. I would not could not in the shower, I would not could not while sifting flour. I would not could not while shearing sheep, I would not could not while I sleep. Well yes I would if I knew how, but I would not could not while milking a cow.

I love Stephen's patterns and have Pogona and Clockwork queued!

Hmmm... I would never knit at the theater. The movie theater, yes, the stage theater, I don't think so. There are also a lot of work situations that seem inappropriate times/places for knitting as well!

sbflame said...

I wanted very badly to knit as a calming activity during a recent week of hostile environment training I had to attend for work, but ultimately decided the ex-Royal Marines teaching the course might not look too kindly on my K1P1 while they tried to teach me about how to survive abduction/might've intentionally sprayed my project with fake blood.

hannah said...

I don't think I could knit in the washroom.. and I generally don't knit in class because I don't take very good notes!

Spikey said...

Gorgeous yarn! There are very few places where I would not knit...a wedding, a funeral, an interview, a holiday dinner. That's about it.

Juney said...

I can't remember if I said yet...."ooo-la-la"! That is some yummy yarn!

Where I wouldn't *consider* it?! I think everywhere is fair game.

josiekitten said...

Gorgeous yarn - really autumnal colours. I think I'd pretty much knit anywhere now.

Kristen said...

I usually knit at home, but one place I would not knit is at a religious service. Even if I knew I could be attentive, I think it would be distracting to others.
That yarn looks like delicious autumn!

I would never knit at work but man I would really love too especially during long boring meetings when no one asks me anything anyways!

Oh, that young man's patterns and that yarn! It would be very hard not to knit everywhere and all the time with either! Of course, the usual places, work, school, church I try to keep focused. Outside of those, wherever and whenever there is a moment, there are my trusty purse projects to keep the fingers nimble...

kjt said...

While driving, and at a funeral.

Oh, during Parent/Teacher conferences too.

JP said...

Why does Sunday always sneak up on me :S

I time when I should not be knitting is when I'm driving.

The truthful time of when I'm actually not knitting or thinking about knitting is when I'm asleep.

Love the yarn colors!

Very beatiful yarn and patterns!!!
As someone else said, I would never knit anywhere in public that would draw attention to myself or my knitting. I prefer to knit at home...
