The two winners of the Traveling Woman Collection and a skein of Plucky Knitter Primo are:

Phyllis & knitwork

Congratulations! Please contact me at yarnonthehouse@gmail.com to collect your prizes.

I apologize for being late this week; however, the prize arrived a day late and I really wanted to share a picture of the beautiful yarn being offered, but I promise, it was all worth the wait! Meet our wonderful and generous sponsor this week: Sunshine Yarns. Dani is the cool owner and artist behind this line of yarn and she did a fun written interview for us. Take a look...

1. Dani, please start by telling us a little bit about yourself and what you do?

Hello, and thanks so much for having me! Let's see ---- my name is Dani and I just bought a house with my husband Scott in Boulder, CO. I grew up in Colorado, so its good to be back! We have two kitties, Soma and Kali who are like our little kids. I'm a very outdoorsy person --- I hike, bike, run, swim and have recently started doing triathalons. I also love food and have become obsessed with our garden and eating what we grow. I love to read, love to go to happy hour and am dying to start sewing. I'm a pretty laid back person and try to take each day at a time. Sunshine Yarns fits really well into who I am as a person. Its often hard to balance the business and my own life, especially since we have grown so much the past couple of years. But, it keep me on my feet! You can see what we are up to at our website here: http://www.sunshineyarns.com; or see our "not too up to date" blog here: http://www.sunshineyarns.com/blog. We also have a wonderful and very active Ravelry group called Sunshine Yarnies --- come check it out!.

2. You offer some amazing hand dyed yarns. Where does your inspiration come from?

I am so inspired by the world around me. I grew up in the mountains of Colorado and from an early age, was out hiking, skiing, canoing, camping. I think this has always made me appreciate nature. I love to look at yarn and see an ocean, a sky, a rainforest. I also love to travel --- many of my colorways come from recent journeys both close to home and from around the world.

3. What got you started in dyeing yarns?

Let's see, well, while working as an Environmental Scientist in Boston, I started knitting alot more frequently and also started perusing knitting blogs. I saw the Kool-Aid craze sweep across the blogs and wanted to give it a try. I was quickly hooked and started Sunshine Yarns not long after that (this was Fall 2005). Starting a business wasn't something I really set out to do, it kind of just happened. Its been a learning experience for me, but I am thrilled with how things turned out. I think sometimes its better when you kind of fall into something you love to do!

4. I know that your yarns and colors are probably like children to you, but what's you current favorite colorway and/or yarn base that you offer?

My favorite colors have always been blues and greens, but recently I've been addicted to oranges and yellows. I don't think I can give you one colorway, but a few of my current favorites are Peacock, Saffron and Wanderer. I love, love Sportweight yarns --- so my current favorite base is the Merino Sport (or Luxury Sport).

5. What will be next for you? Do you have new colorways in the works that you can share with us?

Well, our next BIG thing is that we are going to Stitches West in February! Its our very first public appearance. I'm so excited, but there is also alot to get ready for! After that, we plan on having some new base yarns this year, and will hopefully continue to offer up our fun yarn kits and clubs. I'm always dyeing up new colorways, so its always good to check out our Tuesday store updates. This week's is 1-11-11 at 11am MST. How cool is that?!

6. Why do you knit?

I've always loved arts and crafts. I used to watch my amazing grandmother knit and sew, paint and bead. I love to knit because it is creating --- its relaxing, its fun, and its a great excuse to get together with knitting friends :)

7. When did you learn to knit and who taught you?

I am a self-taught knitter --- decided one day that I just had to knit and went to Michaels for some cheap yarn and needles (let's see, this is the Fall of 2003). After looking up some internet tutorials, I sat down to cast on a scarf. It turned out to be a blanket for our cats, because I had no idea how many stitches to cast on. I think I had at least 100 in bulky yarn. We laugh now, because I had the nerve to just keep on knitting, rather than frog and start over!

8. If you were to knit and live anywhere in the world, where would you knit and live?

I've traveled alot over the years, but New Zealand felt the most like home to me; plus there is sheep galore. To be honest though, I'm perfectly happy on our 2 acres here in Colorado :)

9. What's been your worst knitting or in your case, yarn dyeing disaster?

Hmm, I've actually never had anything too horrible happen! I guess I would say the worst disaster was last year, when we had a sudden wind storm, and I was moving all the drying roving inside. I tripped and fell over a pot and cracked a few ribs and partially dislocated my shoulder. Yep, seriously.

10. And last but not least, if you were to be drinking a cocktail while reading my blog, what would it be?

A rum and tonic with lots of lime of course!

Thank you, Dani, so much for visiting us! Sunshine Yarns is offering one of the coolest giveaways, the Dipped Infinity Kit. I'll let Dani tell you all about it:

"Dipped infinity Kits create an amazing scarf or scarf knit in the round --- it is joined, so its like a huge cowl. The pattern that comes with the kit is by Laura Chau. You always knit two colors together, so you get a really beautiful fabric, with the colors blending into one another. To find out more information, take a peek on Ravelry to see all the beautiful finished knits! You can view all the color sets we offer on Ravelry, or in our Sold Out section on the website, www.sunshineyarns.com. You can simply type in "infinity" and what we offer pops up. We offer color sets such as: Secret Garden, Be Natural, Find Me A River, Shoots and Leaves to name a few! If you are interested in ordering, please email me!"

Check out some of these amazing knitted scarves:

Kit color: Secret Garden

Kit color: Find Me a River

And, here is the lovely kit in the Autumn kit colorway Dani has sent over for one lucky follower to win:

Isn't that just cool?! I told you it was worth the wait.

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.

2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 1/16/11. Just imagine... it's a cold winter evening with snowflakes falling outside and you are sitting in the most comfortable chair by a cozy warm fire. What are you knitting?

I'll randomly pick the winners on Sunday and post the results on Monday along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

Ve

I'd be knitting either something cozy to keep me warm or something to look forward to the summer months. :-) maybe a hat or a light shawl.

Haley said...

I'd be knitting a warm cowl and some matching fingerless mitts to keep me cozy for the coming months.

Charlotte said...

I'd be knitting some toasty warm slippers ... preferably using New Zealand Merino and Possum wool. Heaven!

Marlitharn said...

I'd probably be knitting a soft cozy sweater - that wouldn't actually be finished until summertime, so I wouldn't get to wear it until next winter, but in the meantime it would keep my lap warm!

Kimberly B. said...

Well, except for the fire part, that's exactly what I've been doing lately!
So I would be knitting what I'm working on now; warm wool socks to go inside my boots!
Thanks for the great giveaway!

Michelle said...

I'm thinking a nice, soft sweater. Now I'm wishing for a cold, snowy winter day and a fireplace!

Marianna said...

I'd probably be knitting the same thing I should be knitting now....a replacement hat for a friend (his old one was stolen) because he currently is suffering through the winter without a warm hat.

Tracy said...

i really want to knit the aidez cardigan! i've been dreaming about it all afternoon :)

Pretentious Wombat said...

I've been sitting on a comfy sofa sans fire but outside it's a snowy world so I thing I'd be working on another shawl. It would need to be a fairly quick knit because I would definitely want it to grow quickly to keep away the winter chill!

Anonymous said...

Hi, I AM sitting by the fire with an Irish coffee and as usual I am working on something for my granddaughter. This time it is 'Ella Funt'

Anonymous said...

Definitely a baby blanket. It will keep my knees warm and I will have warm, happy thoughts for the baby.

Rachelle said...

I'll be working on my Central Park Hoodie with the alternative cables; in a yummy felted wool and angora

Iesadora said...

I would be buried under a pile of blankets with just my hands and eyes sticking out crocheting a scarf. I seem to be making them year round, I don't have the patience to make a blanket lol

Heather said...

Probably a sweater. I've been on a sweater kick lately.

But maybe, if I won, I'd be working on a scarf in that gooooorgeous yarn!

TK said...

That image evokes a chunky afghan. Maybe the afghan is already knit and a small project like socks or mitts is being knit. Nothing with too much movement, so to stay cozy.

Stephanie RJ said...

I'd be knitting my lovely Stansborough blanket, as I am now - but it would feel a bit more appropriate with snowflakes out the window than it does here in the desert!

ohdessa said...

Probably some mittens.

dclulu said...

I'd be knitting a dipped infinity scarf, of course!

I'd be knitting the Saroyan Scarf - I love it! I've just finished one in extra fine merino, and plan to knit at least two more in cotton/ silk.

I'd be knitting a warm, cozy sweater. The kind that doesn't have to look good 'cos it's just made to feel warm and snuggly.

I would knit a warm poncho. That yarn looks amazing.

That sounds like me a few weeks ago when we still had snow... I was and would again be knitting a warm cuddly lace scarf or shawl :)

Michaela said...

I would be knitting a warm and cozy shawl in a wosrted weight yarn. I've made a few of those, and they are my favourite shawls- nice and big to wrap around myself and keep warm!!

Erica said...

This is gorgeous work! I have hesitated making one of these because I am so indecisive...you have taken guess work out of it!

Sue said...

Those colors are gorgeous. I dream in fall colors year round. And since I did have snow, a fire and some hot tea this week, I can say I am knitting a hat for DH to keep his head warm when we walk in the mornings.

Gertie said...

This is exactly what I am doing today. I'll be finishing up a few wip socks that have been piling up.

Tara said...

Well, I don't have the fireplace, but I do have the snow and last night I was working on a cowl.

Ginger said...

I'd be working on my sweater (still). I recently started my first sweater and I'm hoping to get it finished while it's still cold enough to wear it!

patsy said...

I'm working on a hooded vest. It will be so warm when its finished

aanderson said...

I would be working on one of my many WIP or if I won something with that beautiful autumn yarn.

Finishing up a nice warm baby blanket for a friend!

i'm nearing the cuff on the 2nd sleeve of a sweater, the Dark & Stormy cardigan by Thea Colman. and i severely covet the yarn in this week's giveaway. :)

Well, either a cozy sweater for me (hourglass), a lace shawl (damson), or more mittens for the kids (they can never have enough)! Lovely colors in the autumn kit.

Cindy said...

That is exactly my plan for the day. I'll be knitting a cowl for my mom. Thanks for the giveaway!

crookedknits said...

Well, I'm already doing it, except with a space heater instead of a fire haha. I'll be working on some Mooody Hose socks :o)

Amy said...

On cold winter night I'd be knitting a pair or socks.

Suzanne said...

This is the case for us right now because the kids are home for the second snow day. I'll be knitting alternately on socks and Amy's Tappan Zee cardigan. Those yarns are beautiful!

Keya said...

I just got into the knitting of cowls--have made two so far of different patterns. This looks like a fun pattern! Socks on tap today for our THIRD snow day in a row, which brings Christmas vacation to just two days shy of a month!

Erin said...

Oooh, that is so pretty! Lately, while the snow has been falling, I've been working on A)a pair of cozy socks and B)a cabled cardi.

Ann286 said...

Wow! That is some beautiful yarn.
Since I'm bit on the cheap side and I keep our heat turned down I tend to knit with a blanket on me. So I would be knitting, by the cozy fire, something I recently finished and would happily knit again, Jared Flood's Girasole blanket. It was a joy. And if not that, a plain raglan or vanilla socks out of goreous wool.

Thanks for the great giveaway.

staci said...

Well, *hopefully* I'll be knitting that Autumn scarf kit, lol!

I just finished a replacement balaclava for my hubby (and just in time before the serious cold temps we've been having.) And am currently working on a pair of socks for him and a second Andrea's Shawl by Kirst Kapur :)

CarolynEll said...

I'll be working on my wedding shawl!

A giant cowl out of bulky hand spun....actually, maybe I will go do that now....

I love meeting new artist such as Dani. The best snowstorm knitting by the fire would be a pair of mitts in a chunky yarn! Then I'd get a matching hat done up.

I'd love to be knitting my first sweater!! I'm really hoping to cast on for one this year, but first I'm trying to finish up all my unfinished WIPs from 2010 (and, in some cases, before that, yikes!). :)

Erin B said...

Socks! 2011 is all about socks for me. Must finish one pair!

Jen Price said...

Beautiful colors! I would be knitting whatever is next in line on my knitting list! Right now it's a sweater for Phoebe Mouse (from the giveaway I won here!), next is a pair of knucks, and then some pillow covers. I think I'll stop there before I get overwhelmed!

StaceyKnitsIt said...

I'd knit one of the several sweaters or cardigans in my queue.

I'd probably knitting a cozy hat and/or a scarf. I love hats! And scarves! ♥

JoAnna said...

Socks. Most definitely socks in spunky summer colors.

Cindy said...

Something with a bulky weight wool!

CeltChick said...

If time were no object -- I had nowhere else I had to be or nothing else I HAD to do -- I would be knitting a stole out of hand dyed merino. I have one that's been WIP for about 2 years now, and it just keeps getting put into hibernation for other rush jobs.

Kassia said...

Beautiful!! More snow is forecasted here (Iowa) so I'll definitely be knitting. The top of my wip pile includes a hat for my hubby and a hat & cowl for my mom. :)

Kelly B. said...

It is nice and chilly here. I'd love to snuggle up with some tea and an soft throw rug I've been working on. Because I'm in Texas this is the only time of year I can work on a large, cuddly project.

i've got a ripple afghan *gasp - crochet!* that I've been working on for about 2 years. It gets pulled out on the first snowfall of the year, then lives in a basket to be worked on anytime it snows or is insanely cold. With all the snow we had last winter, I've gotten really far on it!

Jim Darkmagic and Emma Richmond said...

I'd be knitting on my Dark and Stormy, which seems to be taking forever! It's actually exactly what I was working on last night while it was snowing. My husband and I had the blinds pulled so we could watch the big fat snowflakes coming down. It was so distracting, I didn't get very much knitting done!

Carrie B said...

Since I am at home I am probably knitting something big, a sweater or large shawl.

Liz said...

I just found out that friends of mine are pregnant - so I'm working on an adorable baby blanket. Too heavy to carry around, plus it'll keep me warm while I knit.

Phyllis said...

I'd be knitting some big, warm afghan. I've never been brave enough to start one, because I think it would take too long and be too hot to work on most of the time.

Well for one I'd love to be knitting this kit, those colors are gorgeous :) But I'd see myself knitting a cozy pair of cashmere socks... one of these days I'll knit myself a pair.

OMG, I would hope to be knitting this gorgeous cowl! Beautiful design and colors. Love it!

Suburban prep said...

I am knitting a Misti Aplaca sweater. I found the book and pattern last summer and then the correct yarn a few weeks later. I was knitting a few Christmas gifts so I put this aside and now I have gone back to it. (I hope it fits).

LeAnn said...

Since I just can't avoid paying attention to a beautiful fire, I would probably be knitting up a Traveling Woman Stole. The pattern is so easily memorized that I wouldn't have to constantly watch my stitches. I would be comfortably squished into my chair and watching the flames lick the air above the wood and listen to the soft crackle. Now THAT's heaven!

Kamigaeru said...

That sounds exactly like the weather where I live - minus the fire! I would be working on a wool sweater (which I am now, Roam from Knitty) to keep warm!! Beautiful colors in the giveaway...

I would be knitting a Multnomah Shawl...in fact I just cast one on last night. :) Don't have a fireplace, but my electric throw blanket makes for cozy knitting anyway.

Does it even matter what one would be knitting when sitting by a cozy fire with snowflakes drifting down outside? Just to be knitting . . .

Becci said...

I would be knitting something big and cozy like a shrug or a sweater so that it's big enough to be used as a blanket while I'm knitting it!

Ertman-Trowbridge Family said...

Well, you pretty much describe my life every night! Except there is no fire and you left out the occasional screaming baby . . . But the snow part and the cozy chair part and the knitting part are right!

So . . . I am currently knitting a sweater vest for my nephew and am about to begin a sweater for my youngest's first birthday. That is what I would like to knit in such a situation and that IS what I am knitting!

Judi A. said...

I would hope it would be a scarf, using a "Dipped Infinity Kit"(the colors are gorgeous!)I'd won in a giveaway! If not, then most likely it would be a sweater, as that seems to be what I knit most. :-)

I don't have to imagine too hard...we are having a mini blizzard here in RI. I'm in my "cozy corner" working on a ruffled scarf in fingeing weight yarn. I love the colorways used in those cowl kits!

No snow flakes fall where I live in the south of Portugal (I had too many decades of shoveling snow! north of NYC!) I love a no-snow environment! Still, we get cold nights in the winter and chilly days here. A fire heats our living room and on the coldest nights I twist a sofa to catch the heat, cuddle up to a cat, and get to work on socks -nothing beats handknit socks in our wet winters - or a sweater to ward off the damp and chill. I've already got the fingerless mitts I need to keep going on the computer.

I'm either finishing the sweaters for my nieces, finishing the never-ending shawl for my mom, or making progress on the shawl that i just cast on for myself!

I am snow bound and I am knitting a pair of fingerless gloves and finishing a blanket for my daughter,

A sweater for my friend's baby... and maybe some gloves for me. I always have to have a few things going!!!

The autumn kit has some beautiful colors, it will look great in the cowl pattern. I'm about to start knitting a circular throw blanket in a yummy, natural merino colorway. It's the perfect lap blanket to sit by the fire and, what else, knit!

I'd be working on something super cozy....maybe a big blanket, but let's face it, I'm a sock addict. It would probably be socks

I haven't had a cold winter night to knit since I left Colorado! Hopefully Dani will give the mountains a brief, wistful wave for me. IF I had a cold winter night, and a cold winter to knit for, I guess a nice warm sweater would be ideal. As it is, most nights I'm knitting socks these days!

Well, if I win, I'm probably knitting a Dipped Infinity! Actually, I have been into infinity scarves lately. I have queued a bunch and am about to cast on the GAP-tastic.

I'd like to be knitting cashmere. Well, something wooly at the very least. Maybe silk and wool. Too many addictions, too little time.

That was me last night during the "snowstorm" in Pennsylvania. I'm working on the last section of a scarf for my boyfriend!

A cowl, just the right cozy knit for a cozy day.

I'm knitting socks! I'm so slow at socks and I need more to keep my feet nice and toasty in the frigid weather.

I really need a new hat so that is next on my needles.

I might finally be knitting a sweater for my DH or maybe trying to knit a lace shawl for myself.

I'd be working on my Belle du Nord shawl so that I can wear it on my trip to Europe. (3 weeks)

I'd be knitting a cabled cowl or long scarf.

Well - I would LOVE to be knitting this kit! What awesome colors!!!
I would be knitting a big lacy warm shawl that would keep my lap warm!

It is a cold winter evening and there are snowflakes falling and I've been working on a cozy wool sweater for the husband.

I'd be trying to make progress on my Adamas shawl.

Just love the pattern! I already bought it from Patternfish and just started it using Knit Picks Palette and loving it so far. Would love to make another one! Debbie in alaska

I am knitting some fingerless mitts and a scarf right now- one of my resolutions for 2011 was to use up some bit 'n pieces of leftover yarn- so far I've been soooo good and the random balls of partial skeins are quickly being made into lovely things for other people in 2011!

knitterlydesigns said...

I would be knitting hats, mittens, or scarves. It has been quite cold lately, and I wish I had a fireplace to knit by.

Debbie said...

oh, i would be working on a shawl or cowl for sure.
Love Laura's patterns and the tonal yarns!

I like quick projects like mitts and cowls so I would probably be knitting one of those. I'm a huge Sunshine Yarns fan so I'd definitely be using one of Dani's GORGEOUS colors!

I'd be knitting some warm MCN socks for my cold feet!

I'd be knitting a huge double looped cowl in a tweed stitch. A Classic.

As we just had the most wonderful extended weekend thanks to a couple of inches of snow---socks and socks and more socks. However if I was alone and could sit down for a few hours without any little (ahem) distractions-I would love to work on an afghan.

Katherine (ScarletFever) said...

I would be knitting a blanket keep me warm while I am knitting!

Tina D. said...

Most definitely mitts...they're an obsession of mine. :-) I'm trying to decide now which two of my Sunshine Lux Sport colors to use in our Colorway SAL right now....

melosa said...

Right at this moment....? All that I can think about is knitting a warm cabled cardigan (think Aidez!) for me. I can't remember the last thing that I knit myself.

BTW, I LOVE Dani's yarns and have been eying up the dipped infinity kits for some time.

oooh I'm knitting slipper socks or a chunky, chunky scarf.

Lael said...

Well, it is a cold night here, soft snow falling down - no fire, unfortunately - and I was actually working on some wool rovings - but if I had traded those out for knitting - wool socks.

JanetK said...

I would like to be knitting a beautiful soft afghan, since I've never knit one for MYSELF!

Sarah Bear said...

Depends if it's before Christmas or not. If it's after Christmas, I'd be knitting something frivolous for myself, unless I had plans for a Valentine's knit!

a cardi for my 1.5 yo daughter. who doesn't love the immediacy of knitting for the young, esp one of your own?

I would be knitting one of my several UFOs that I am determined to get done before I buy a ton more yarn.

I joined the Catch Up group on Rav. Hoping it will keep me motivated.

I'd be making nice thick warm house socks and wouldn't be planning to leave that spot anytime soon.

I'm knitting socks! They're the perfect comfort knitting.

Connie said...

I love to knit things I can have laying over my legs when I knit on cold days, so it would have to be a thinks shawl in something warm and snuggly on a cold winter day.

Ely said...

I'd be knitting socks. Not the thin and fit-in-your-shoe kind, but heavy woolen, house-socks to wear on cold floors all winter or as an extra layer inside the ice-skates.

Meghan V said...

I'm working on finishing a felted purse for my sister, its only a little late as it was meant to be a Christmas gift!

Barb T. said...

I'd be knitting Jared Flood's Pavement scarf and Wendy Bernard's the Hunch slouch (I do a little of one, then a little of the other; never a dull moment! lol!).

karlaknits said...

I'd be knitting a warm, soft, fair isle hat. A pattern I've been wanting to try for ages.

I'm knitting the sweater for my husband. I've knitted for years and for many people, but never him. Right now, I'm doing just that (and it's a secret)!

Jen said...

Dani's yarns are so beautiful! You can always tell how inspired she is by everything around her.

Karen said...

It IS cold and I sit by our warm woodstove and I'm knitting the Eternity Scarf with Dani's awesome Pomegranate in worsted:)
