Congratulations! Please contact me at yarnonthehouse@gmail.com to collect your prize.
This past Saturday I got the chance to take a short trip out of town to Portland, Oregon. I love visiting Portland and this time around I got the chance to visit a really unique yarn store called Yarnia. The reason Yarnia is different than other LYS's that you or I might be used to is because at this yarn store you get to pick and custom blend your own yarn. Yes, you heard me correctly! I think it's easier for you to just watch this neat demo video that Yarnia has put together than have me try to explain how it works:
Honestly, how cool is that?! Lindsey, the owner and lady behind Yarnia, was kind enough to let me visit her store, do a picture tour, and she's also our lovely sponsor this week (we'll get to that shortly). Take a look at all the fun pics of my visit first!
The first thing that strikes you when you walk in is all the beautiful array of colors on cones that speckle the room.
Each section is separated by fiber.
You can't help but make a beeline to the cashmere!
In the center of the room, Lindsey has all the wonderful house blends.
These blends are some the most popular "colorways" and yarn combos.
I just love all the little teeny-tiny swatches that show you what the blends look like knitted up.
They look like itty-bitty blankets for li'l dollies or something.
So cute! Not to mention the blends are all really beautiful.
You can check out the house pre-blended colorways here online in the Yarnia web store and you have to check out the brand new Custom Yarn Creator.
A few of the bestsellers:
After you pick out the different yarns that you would like to blend, Lindsey puts the cones on this shelf.
Then all the yarns are strung towards the unique Yarnia machine (that's Lindsey!)...
...and wound up onto one cone. That's a solid lace weight yarn that's being wound up for me!
Hope you enjoyed the picture tour! If you're ever in the Portland area, you have to go visit...
Check out the beautiful yarn I picked up while I was at Yarnia.
I can't wait to cast on with these beauties!
From left to right: custom semi solid fingering weight blend of 2 strands wool and 1 strand alpaca in gray tones, custom solid lace weight blend of 2 strands of wool in olive green, and a fingering weight house blend of bamboo, cotton, and wool named Bandon.
Thank you so much, Lindsey, for being our guest and sponsor! Yarnia has donated a cone of a house blend fingering weight yarn in a color called Gaspe.
The winner will also receive a darling little pin that says, "make cones not war," and two 10% off coupons.
I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:
1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.
2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 1/23/11. Have you heard about Yarnia or ever visited the shop before? Or, is this your first time hearing about this unique DIY yarn heaven?
I'll randomly pick the winners on Sunday and post the results on Monday along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.
Sincerely,
Ve

I've never heard of Yarnia before either .... but my excuse is that I live in New Zealand. It looks faboulous though. What a great idea and thanks for your generosity Lindsey.
I have heard of Yarnia but did not realize you could create your own yarn! I knew they sold yarn in cones, that was it! But wow, that would be so cool to create your own!
Thirst time, but I loving it :)
What a lovely concept! No, I haven't heard of Yarnia before, but I think we need a franchise in London, UK.
I have never heard of Yarnia before, but if I am in portland it would be worrrrrth a visit.
Yarnia might be worth taking a special trip for!
I hadn't heard of Yarnia before and thanks to YOTH, now I have. I love the idea of concocting your own yarn. That is totally cool.
This is so cool! Yet another reason that I belong in the Pacific Northwest...
House blends! I love it. It's like my favorite things - yarn and coffee - together. Those tiny squares are wondrous.
Fascinating! Not only had I never heard of this store, I'd never even imagined such a thing. The video was great. :-)
I'm totally intrigued! This is the first I've heard of Yarnia, even though I was in Portland for a visit not too long ago. Thanks for all the incredible photos in this post! I would love to win.
Yes, news of Yarnia has even reached me here in Australia (although it is possible that I spend a little too much time on the internet!). Ever since I read about it I have had the distinct green glow of jealousy about me. It sounds like a place I dream of.
I've never heard of this place before - what I fantastic idea! I'd love to win to check out this amazing stuff!
I've actually read about Yarnia before, and was very intrigued. A blog I follow visited the store last summer, I think, and the writer took pictures of Yarnia's gorgeous cones. Too bad that I live on the exact opposite side of the country!
What an awesome idea for a yarn store. I would love to visit it.
Thanks for the chance to win

Well I've been to Portland, but have never heard of Yarnia. I only wished I lived closer; the yarns are beautiful. And to be able to customize your own yarn PRICELESS!
I haven't heard of this before but it truly sounds like yarn heaven! It's also very aptly named - as is the pretty yarn you're giving away - le Gaspe ;)

I've never heard about Yarnia before and I am in awe! I live in Virginia, so a visit is unlikely, but it looks amazing. Thanks for sharing your trip.
I've never heard of Yarnia before, but I think it's a fantastic idea that you can create your own yarn. Should be offered in Germany, too.
Never heard of it, but it's a really cool idea.
I've never heard of Yarnia before, but I know exactly what I'm doing if/when I visit Portland next!
That is the most amazing store ever! Wish I lived closer to Portland, then I'd would definitely go there.

This is my first time hearing of Yarnia, but I think the store deserves a visit now! What is more perfect to add to a stash than a custom cone? Awesome giveaway.

I'd heard their name before, but didn't know about their custom blending of yarn! What a neat idea. The possibilities are boggling. I'd love to have that cone of Gaspe; I've been combining two fingering weight yarns to make stoles that are warm & pretty, and that color would go so well with 3 other colorways I already have.
First time I ever heard of Yarnia but I have a good excuse: I live across the world! There are no yarns like these where I'm from... :(
I've heard about Yarnia via the internet, but I never realized their unique creativity with yarn. What an idea! Wondering if other weights besides lace and fingering are made? Would love to win and try some of their yarn!

Never heard of Yarnia before. Great photos! Love your Olive Green yarn color! Love the giveaway color too! Wish I could visit there; I'm so far away.
I haven't heard of or been to Yarnia before, but it sounds so fun! I kinda want to take a trip to the west coast just for that! It reminds me of Habu Textiles in NYC- they do something similiar.
I've had Pacamara fingering weight on my want list for some time now but I wasn't quite sure about ordering it....now that I've read you entry I'm going to give it a try and the CUSTOM yarn...which I didn't realize they even had!
Wow! I've never heard of anything like that. It's a really unique idea.
I have heard of Yarnia but never been there before. I will be in Portland for Sock Summit next summer and the shop is on my list of places to go!! :)

I've never heard of Yarnia before- such a clever nam! It looks really fun- and also a little intimidating. I guess I would need plenty of practice!!! ;)
What a brilliant idea for a yarn shop!
I have heard of Yarnia, but have never had the privilege of visiting. I haven't spent much time out on the West Coast. Someday.
Oh wow!!! That store is like heaven for my knitter's heart!!! I would so love to go there!!! Although I would probably be broke after!! hahaha

Can't wait to see what you will be making with that wonderful yarn!
I hadn't heard of Yarnia, but what a great idea! Thanks for the giveaway.
Oh my gosh, this is totally amazing. Nothing like that exists out here in Mass!
have heard of it thanks to podcasters, but your pictures make me want to go. what a cool concept.
I went to school in Portland and heard about Yarnia right before I left after graduation. I took a bus with a friend out to find the shop. We trekked up and down the street trying to find it (we missed it, but eventually found the store.) Unfortunately, we went the only day it was closed. I never got to go. I was so sad. The idea is awesome.
I haven't heard of Yarnia before, but I love the concept!! Do they do any Internet sales? Thanks for hosting the giveaway!
I have heard of it through Ravelry, and noticed it because of the darling name! It's a very intriguing idea, to be able to blend your own yarns...if I lived nearby I would definitely be a regular.
Never heard of yarnia before, but I think it's brilliant!
That is such a great idea! Wow! If I make up up to Oregon, I'll definitely stop by!
Oh my goodness, that looks like HEAVEN!!!! Living in the UK we don't have anything like that that I know of - most places do well to have a LYS!
Thanks for introducing me to YET ANOTHER fabulous yarn shop!
I've never heard of Yarnia before (I live in Maine)but MAN OH MAN does it look awesome! What a neat concept. I'm such a sucker for custom yarns. Great contest (and I hope I win!)
I was just looking at their website last week! What a great idea! And a great giveaway!
Holy smokes! Yarnia sounds like an awesome, unique shop. Would love a chance to create my own yarn!
I had not heard of Yarnia before. Very interesting concept.
I've seen the ads on Ravelry but didn't realize exactly what Yarnia did. That's so ingenious!
Never heard of Yarnia or even the concept before so what a super idea - customising my projects :)
This is the first time I've heard of Yania. What a wonderful way to create unique yarn.
I have never heard of a yarn shop quite like this one. It looks beautiful and unique.

I've never heard of this store but it looks awesome.
Yes, I have heard of Yarnia but haven't made it down to Portland to visit yet. Someday though...
I haven't heard of Yarnia before (well, not this one, I call the wardrobe where I store MY yarn "Yarnia" too). What an awesome concept! I'm headed off right now to check out the website...
I have NEVER heard of Yarnia before but you can bet I am checking out her store. I have a sister in the Navy that is out in Washington. I might see if I can send her down. Beautiful work.
My word! Talk about being spoilt for choice. I think I'd have to take a sleeping bag in with me! What a fabulous idea!
I have not heard of Yarnia but the yarn looks "yummy"!
Wow! That is So Cool! I've never heard of Yarnia before.
I fall in love with this fantastic blend!
I've not heard of Yarnia before, living in the UK, but it looks just fabby ~ imagine being able to blend your very own yarn without the hassle of spinning. WOW.
I have never heard of L's shop, but it looks fantastic!
Never heard of it before but it sounds so cool! IF I ever take a trip to Portland I'll have to insist on making a stop there!
I heard about Yarnia once before, on the Knit Cents podcast. Rachael was raving about how cool it is! If only I had been a knitter back when I lived on the West Coast.
I had never heard of it before, but now I'm considering a trip to Portland just for it. How neat!
I've never heard of Yarnia before, but it looks really intriguing. And Aunt Betty lives just over the border in Ridgefield WA ... hmmm.
I'm not sure if I'd be able to put something together ... so many choices! Thank heavens the prize is already combined!
Thanks for this beautiful contest, and the entertaining video!

I have never heard of Yarnia, but it's just one more reason for a Portland trip!
I have been hearing about Yarnia for a couple of years now, but I don't go to Portland very often. Picking the strands that go into your yarn sounds wonderful, but I understand they are not actually plyed together? So if I took a cone home would it work to ply it on my wheel? Would I lose yardage if I did?
LaVelle
What an awesome idea! I live on the East Coast, so I've never heard of it, but man, what a clever business. And a great name!
This is the first time I've heard of Yarnia. What a great concept!
I have been hearing about Yarnia for a couple of years now but I don't get to Portland often. It would be fun to see all the yarns and colors. So when you pick different strands they just wind them onto a cone together but don't ply them together? Would it work to ply them on a wheel when you get home and would you lose yardage if you did that?
This was the first time I heard about Yarnia. The video was very interesting to watch.
This is the first time I've ever heard of this shop but think its a good concept.
I have never heard of anything like this and am intrigued. I am seeing a trip to Portland in my future.

My husband and I have plans to visit Portland this week. I'll have to see if I can't convince him to take me to Yarnia. I still have some Christmas cash left.
This is my first time hearing about it, but it looks delicious! I also think the tiny swatches are just precious!
I've never been to Portland, and never heard of Yarnia. The video was very fun. It reminded me of Charlie Chaplin's movie Modern Times (with better results).

Holy moley, those yarns are gorgeous. Now who do I know there so I can go visit?
Never heard about it before. It really sounds like a great shop! A really wonderful idea. Living in Michigan, just south of Detroit, doesn't present too many opportunities for experimenting with local LYS's. I would love to win! Thanks for the chance to win.
Wow. I have never heard of Yarnia or any other DIY yarn store. It is almost like you get the joy of spinning without having to know how to spin. Those colors are so amazing. I wonder what that is like to have so many choices and colors and materials to choose from.
Holy crap - I've never heard of this, and it sounds amazing!!!!
This is the first I've heard of Yarnia but it looks like so much fun, and great yarn. I would love to try it. cindymen on ravelry
Yarnia is new to me.. I'm headed over to their website right now to check it out...
Amazing that you can blend/create your own!
I found Yarnia by accident a few years ago but have never ordered from them. It seems too hard to figure out one's own blend without seeing it for oneself. I wish I lived on the West Coast.
Thanks for the giveaway!
Amazing stuff! Thanks for sharing!
I haven't heard of Yarnia before but I only live 2 hours away so on my next trip to Portland I plan on stopping by.
