Hi, knitters! I'm super excited to bring you another fantastic giveaway! A few months ago I ran across String Theory yarns. I'd seen their yarns before knit up into beautiful projects like: this one, that one, and this one. Everytime I recognized their name in a pattern or project, I thought to myself, "I really need to get a hold of these ladies." Well, I finally did and I invited them to be our lovely sponsor and guests this time around.

My favorite type of yarn is hand dyed sock yarn (in case you didn't know that about me already) and I have to admit that String Theory fingering weight yarns are some of the most marvelous sock yarns I've encountered. I can't even pick a few colors that are my favorite to show off, because I love them all! Check out their very popular Caper Sock line here! I'll wait while you wipe the drool off your keyboard! Their other yarn bases are just as lovely - check those out here. One thing I can say is that the ladies at String Theory know how to dye up magnificent grays. I'm a big fan of semi-solid, mulit-layered gray tones, and String Theory has several that I plan on knitting up in the near future.

String Theory is run by two fun ladies, Karen and Tanis. Here's a little bit about them in their own words:

"We are in our fifth year of business, when we started our venture we were both working as labor and delivery nurses in our local hospital. When the department was closed down; a casualty of the downturn in the economy and changes in health care, we suddenly had time to throw ourselves full speed ahead into String Theory. We started going to fiber fairs and selling wholesale, we are now doing this full time and loving every second.

When not in the shop, or tending dye pots, Tanis can often be found in her amazing flower garden, or shoveling snow to make a path to her greenhouse. Karen can be found growing food to squirrel away for winter or making magic potions in her kitchen. You can find us both pinching our selves about the turns our lives have taken."

Along with the fabulous yarn sponsorship, I also found a fantastic indie designer, Caryl Pierre, that has two terrific shawl patterns that are a wonderful match up for String Theory yarn. Meet the two shawls that are being featured today:

Surya
(photos courtesy of Caryl)

Ruffle My Feathers

Aren't the shawls gorgeous?! I love both of them for different reasons, but with equal delight! Surya has classic triangle shaping and beautiful lace stitch patterns that flow so well together, and Ruffle My Feathers has unique shaping and I could totally rock a modern and fun shawl like that.

The girls of String Theory have sent over two skeins of Caper Sock in Spruce Head for two lucky followers to have a chance to win, and Caryl our talented featured designer is throwing in a choice of either Surya or Ruffle My Feathers (PDF pattern format) for the two winners as well. Take a look at the stunning yarn skeins:

A little tidbit about the color inspiration, "Spruce Head is a color inspired by a point of land that Tanis spent some time sailing around. The natural beauty that is so abundant in our area, is the source of much inspiration for our yarn colors."

Thank you Karen, Tanis, and Caryl for being our lovely sponsors this giveaway! Come back and visit us anytime!!

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.

2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 4/24/11. My hubby and daughter came up with this question for you this time around: If you were able to turn ANY material into yarn and knit with it, what would you want to have a chance to knit with?

Hubby says he would want me to knit him a carbon fiber scarf and Jasmine says she would want something knit outta ice!! I think that would defeat the purpose of a knitted item (which in my opinion is to keep you warm), but maybe it would be practical for hot summers, I guess.

I'll randomly pick the winners in 2 weeks and post the results along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

Ve

Hmm, yarn from any material? I would just love if yarn smelled like jasmine... I really hate the smell of wet wool during blocking.

Rachel said...

Wouldn't it be amazing if you actually could knit spiderwebs?
Strong, beautiful, and useful for catching stuff you accidentally drop.
If not that then I'd settle for knitting with flowers, like Wendy suggests, although you'd have to be quick to avoid the wilt factor.

Joanne said...

My dream material .... clouds. Soft fluffy clouds to make a soft fluffy yarn. Not sure about the moisture content ... but I'm sure they'd be soft ;)

Wow, the mind boggles. Carbon fiber sounds really interesting. But really anything that can be made into a string shape can be knitted.

My husband also said carbon fiber. I'm thinking Diamond yarn would be pretty awesome!

I would like to knit with yarn made of linen. Never saw one, but maybe they do exist.

I'm imagining yarn made out of dandelion fluff :) Not practical or realistic but kind of magical all the same!

Mithril?
How's that for geeky?

I would love to knit grass... Beautiful green and so fresh for the summer !

PS : There is some linen yarn, you can find some on Ravelry.

This may sound really strange, but my little girls hair (if she was like Rapunzel and had miles of it) It is the softest silkiest thing I've ever felt and such a pretty auburn color! I'm so creepy right now...

For me it would be thisledown. Such a beautiful plant so spikey at the same time. Thisledown is so soft I used to pull it out the the thisles and let it go when I was a child.

My dream material would be bougainvillea - to remind me of wonderful holidays in Greece!

I'd really like something for summer wear - cool but as comfortable to knit with as wool. How about water? Not sticky sea water, but calm, dark, cool water like that of the small, deep lakes we have in Norway.

I think snake scales would be interesting! I wonder if i-cord would feel like a very small snake.

I am sitting by the window sipping a cool lemonade and its blistering heat outside. That makes me want to knit with water or any cool liquid. Crazy, huh?

I'd like to knit with yarn made of feathers - a shawl from that would feel like you're about to fly away!

what a difficult question!!!

I would like to knit with soft materials... a friend knitted a scarf with milk fiber and she said it's awesome...

Robin said...

Wow that is a hard question... but I think it would be rose petals. They are soft and smell great.

My favorite weather moments are when you wake up and can't see the other side of the street because the fog is so thick. I want to knit myself a blanket or shawl made of fog to wrap myself when it's too hot and sweaty outside.

This sounds sick but hopefully you'll know what I mean: the softness and squishiness of baby's skin.

Btw: I've knit with String Theory yarn before and loved it!

Flowers...I love the pops of color that would be created.

thatkidsmom said...

Fabulous giveaway! What material? Hmmmm...I'd have to say rose petals. And yes, they would have to be red. Can you imagine how rich, smooth and luxurious that would be?

Laura said...

I think I would like to knit with fluffy, warm mashed potatoes. What could be better than comfort food to keep you warm inside and out.

Great giveaway question.
I'd like to try a metal based yarn as I've used stainless steel yarn before and loved the results, how about Copper or Brass?

I'm drawn toward the idea of knitting with chocolate or vodka. I have no idea why. :)

I love the calming scent of lavender, but the sprigs of it are rough, so maybe crushed up lavender leaves, softened with something warm and fluffy like alpaca?

Fun question. I'd go for either strawberries or chocolate. Either way it would smell great and be edible in an emergency. :-)

Thanks for showcasing these ladies today.

My choice of material for yarn would be the fiber stuff that comes out of dried milkweed pods. It's very soft and pure white...would be lovely I think!
But as for the giveaway yarn colour, it's simply gorgeous.

Is it wrong to say wool? I just love knitting with wool, silk isn't bad either. But in a fairy tail, maybe candy, I'd love a candy cowl!

Hmm interesting question. I wonder what knitting with coffee would be like.

Liz said...

So you said anything...
I'd like to knit with that feeling right before a big thunderstorm. That sort of electric charge, heady, anticipation feeling.

That yarn color is incredible! I LOVE it.

I think I'd want to knit with newborn baby hair. :-) Of course, my newborn is sleeping in my lap as I write this, so that's why I say that. Your husband and daughter were much more creative.

Such great ideas here! how about something fresh and green for spring, blossoms, tender leaf buds, little green curly vines?
Love the color of the giveaway yarn, thanks again!

Beautiful colorway!

I would like to knit with rain from a nice dark grey storm. It would probably be a very heavy, drapey yarn. I would make a thick cowl with it.

Hmmmm....good question! I think it would be cool to knit with yarn made out of pussy willows. There's something so soft and comforting about them.

JoAnna said...

Gorgeous colorway!

I adore wool so much it is difficult to think of another material I'd like to knit with - though I am quite impressed with the idea of ice. At a fiber festival, I saw a swatch made of human hair and it wigged me out.

Ok - I figured it out: Love. I'd like to make love into a soft material and knit with it so I could give shawls of love to my favorite people.

(Also, my word verification below is "linwoor"...that sounds like something I could knit with, right?)

I know people have already knitted with dog hair and admittedly, it sounds odd to me (wet blocking something made out of dog hair? Stinky!) but after the loss of our first dog I kind of wish I'd have kept some of his lovely soft orange and white fur to spin. I don't know what I'd knit with it, maybe just a swatch, but it'd have made a nice keepsake.

I know that people have knit with string, have made beautiful jewelry knitting with wire, I think I even read about someone knitting with licorice but I guess I'm not really imaginative enough. I would love to knit freshly cut grass in the summertime. I love the smell and the warmth it exudes.

A variegated yarn made of clouds would be great! White, grey, some pink... And fluffy. I sooo want to knit with cloud yarn!!

Fir trees. In the summer, they have the most beautiful silvery colour, and the warm smell is unbelievable.

If I could, I would knit with the ocean! It's my favorite thing in the whole world, and then I could hear the waves crashing against me while I'm wearing my new garment or accessory!

In honor of spring, I think grass would provide a beautiful texture, and would impart a fresh smell. I love carbon fiber, but would need some special tools to try to knit with it. :-)

I love the fresh alive smell of the peppermint plant I have by my front steps, I would love to have that sent wrapped around me all the time.

Pussywillows! Such a gorgeous grey, and SOoooo soft.

As a kid I used to just stroke them until the "fur" wore off.

Mica would be pretty cool too.

I'd be happy just to be able to knit with that beautiful String Theory yarn though. :)

I would knit something made out of grass, or vanilla beans. I love the smell of both!

This is one awesome question. I think if I could knit with anything it would be golden colored pencil shavings, or even better, indian ink! Maybe in a tonal type of yarn. Those hanks of yarn are beautiful by the way, I would love to experience that!!! And the patterns, oooh oooh!! I'm PurlVerde on Ravelry!

I wish I could knit with the super soft hair from my granddog, Layla.

It's a lot harder than I thought it would be to come up with an answer for this. Flower petals seem like they would be wonderfully soft. I keep thinking it would be great to have my favorite poem or song knit into a shawl so that I could wrap the words around me.

What a cool question. I would love to knit sunflowers in front of a deep blue sky. I love both colours with a passion and if I could arrange the petals with the sky it would be just gorgeous and it would make me smile.

What a question! I think metal would be interesting to knit with.

Tulip petals would be wonderful. They are silky, colorful and smell great.

Flower petals! It would be radiant, soft and perfumed!

Wow, I love all the ideas that have already been said. Can you knit scents? If I could, it might have to be the smell of pine trees in the summer.

Oh I would definitely want to knit something out of sand. One of my favorite things to do when I go to the beach is just digging my feet in. The feel of the sand, the mis of warmth and coolness when you get deep enough.

Oh, for me it would have to be a soft beautiful wood - I think it would be fun!

Surya is a beautiful pattern...

I would like to make yarn out of apples. Actually, it could only smell like apples and I would like it.

i would probably knit something out of this one body wash/scrub I have. It smells so good and it would leave your hands so soft if you made gloves out of it. not to mention it would have to be orange!

Oh my, yes please!

I really like your hubby's answer of carbon fiber. For my answer, I think I'm going to say light, or perhaps prisms. Prisms would be pretty amazing knitted up.

This prize yarn is exactly the colorway I dream of.. Its like the colors of my world, water, earth, sky, trees. Its exceptional.

I like blends.. especially if the different fibers are plied in and obviously different.. so I would like my dream yarn made from laughter, music, and Stargazer lilies (they smell up the whole room when in a vase). If I can have a diamond made from my husbands ashes, why can't I have a yarn made from these?

for some reason, the first thing that came to mind is honey - smooth and silken. but it should also be light as a feather, and reflect the weather - cool as a breeze in summer, warm as a log fire in winter!!!!!

I'd love to knit clouds! I know it's not the most original, but I'd love to think of how they'd feel next to the skin! Thanks for another great giveaway!

I am pretty happy with wool, but agree with some of the more natural comments too like flower petals, grass, etc.

I'd love to knit music - either as a concept or old sheet music.

Anything??? I also have knit with bias strips of fabric, and am currently swatching for a project out of nylon twine.
But as far as something more ethereal, I would like the combination of lucious, wiggle your toes in, grass, with the inside of pussy willows for poufy softness.
