This week I'm bringing back a wonderful and generous sponsor: Joanna & Eric Johnson of Slate Falls Press. Do you remember meeting Joanna last year? She and her husband are the fantastic writing and drawing duo behind the fun childrens' books: Phoebe's Sweater and the new Freddie's Blanket. Their books are truly genius! In essence they are knitting picture books that you can share with your favorite l'il boy or girl.

The newest children's story has the sweetest platypus as its main character! And, is full of darling knitting patterns that are incorporated throughout the entire story. I just can't get over how great this concept is and even my soon to be 10 year old likes the books and patterns. Here's a little more from Joanna herself about the new book and the creative process:

"Eric and I really enjoy working together to create these unique knitting storybooks for children and adults to share together. Often while we are going about our day we discuss little details about the storyline, the illustrations, or the patterns. But our most favorite part of the creative process is when we begin a new book- that initial brainstorming session when a new book is conceived is really an exciting creative moment for us, and it is the big spark that fires the rest of the long journey to having a finished book. I have learned to keep a notebook handy at all times! Of course, the day when thousands of copies of our books arrive is rather exciting, too, but it is that very first collaboration of an idea that we love the most.

From there we talk about character, then names, settings, seasons, deatils, it is all out there on the table to be discussed. When we were exploring animals to be the character in Freddie's Blanket, we talked about a variety of critters. But once the platypus was mentioned, we were smitten. Eric sent me a photo he found of two baby platypodes (yes, this is the correct pluralization!) nestled in the palm of a scientist's hand, that decision was set. From there, we explored the habitat of the platypus, and fell just as hard for the beautiful and interesting plants and animals of Australia. Every animal, plant, leaf, and bug in this new book is Australian. Now even our children want to go there, too! Details like the character names come along early on while we are talking through all of the decisions we need to make. We don't obsess too much over the names, we just try a few out, ask the children how they like them, and call it "good" then and there.

We are actively working on our third book which we plan to publish in 2012. It will be another Phoebe Mouse book and is set during the summer, so our friends in warmer climates can be a part of the fun, too. Eric and I are working through a storyline that pulls in a lot of details from our own childhood summers and we are really enjoying the ways we are finding to bring our two distinct sets of memories together into one story. It will include knitting patterns again (I am going to pick up my needles in just a few minutes here and keep working on the first design, which I am really enjoying!) but this time we are adding in a little something extra to go along with the knitting. There are a few hints on our blog that let you in on the secret- and we are thrilled about who we are working with on it!"

Joanna and Eric have put together a fantastic giveaway for you this time, but first check out some of the patterns in this book:

Just too cute for words! Now onto the good stuff: one Grand Prize winner will receive a signed copy of Freddie's Blanket and EIGHT skeins of Brown Sheep's Company's Serendipity Tweed, a cotton and wool blend. That's enough to knit a Baby Envelope Blanket, Freddie Platypus, and May Platypus. Two runners up will also a receive a signed copy of Freddie's Blanket to add to their knitting library. How fun!

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.

2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 5/8/11. I wanna know if this if your first time hearing about these awesome books? If so, what do you think and do you have a special someone you would love to share them with? If this not your first time hearing about them, tell us what you like about the books and how you ran into them originally?

I'll randomly pick the winners in 2 weeks and post the results along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

Ve

This is the first time I have heard of these books. I am part of a knitting group (who isn't?) that would love to see these books and do the patterns. So very sweet.

I first heard about these books from a French Press Knits blog give-away. The book is too precious, I love all of the patterns for kids. I have several new babies in my life and hopefully there will be many more to share the pattens and books with.

Hi. This is the second time I have heard about Phoebe's Sweater - I think the first time was on the French Press blog? - but it is the first time I have heard about Freddie's Blanket :)
I'm building a collection of knitting/spinning/fibre related children's books that I love sharing with my children (age 4 to 9). They often pull them from the shelf to read too. There is something quite special for a child to look at the book and relate that to what I, or they, are making :)

I have already made Pheobe's sweater for my granddaughter. I would love to make the platypus kids for her.

This is NOT the first time I have heard of these books. I have wanted Phoebe's Sweater for some time now. I have looked at it and it is adorable. And now I am very excited about the prospect of getting Freddie's Blanket. I first learned of these books just by browsing the internet, looking for children themed knitting books.

I've not heard of these books and this is the first time I have visited this blog! I have to get out more often!! Please enter me in your giveaway. I really like what I see here. By the way "Old dog" I'm not a part of a knitting group (yet). I am not all that familiar with online groups, and I haven't found anyone else in the town I live in who knits! Oh, and by the way, my very first grandbaby is due in October. That's who I would share these with! Thank you!

It's the second time I've heard of these books. The first time was when you wrote about the Phoebe book. :-)

I'd love to share them with my children! Especially my girls, ages 3 and 5.

This is the first time I have ever heard of these books and this concept. I just love the patterns! The platypus is darling, what an excellent character! The coolest thing about this concept is that while I may be carrying around my knitting project... I also have a story for my grandchildren in the bag as well with this idea. I'm thrilled with it.

I have never heard of these books, but would love to read them to my daughter. She loves all things hand-knit! The books look very fun. And the yarn is beautiful!

This is not the first time I have heard of these books - one of the members of my knitting group told me about them. I saw them at Stitches West in February and came THIS CLOSE to buying one...or maybe both...anyway - I have a 2-year-old granddaughter that I would love to share the books with and make the patterns for. Pick me! Pick me!!

I first heard about these books on The Knitmore Girls podcast. I would love to make the knitted projects and display them on a shelf in my craft room while I wait for my daughters to finish college, get married, and have lots of grandbabies for me to spoil.

My three year old son is a book afficianado and I think he would love a book that would incorporate one of mommy's favorite hobbies! What fun it would be to knit up the character - what a great idea!

I saw another giveaway of this adorable book, I think on Make It and Love It, but sadly didn't win. ;) I'm a fan of these little Darwinian grabbag creatures, and a new knitter. I'd LOVE to get the book to start my knitting book stash with -- and I'd be ECSTATIC to double my yarn stash with this oh-so-generous giveaway. :)

I've heard of the books from various blogs and they are just too adorable. I definitely want to give making the patterns a whirl when I am a little more experienced at knitting.

Never heard of the book but that's no surprise. Both my daughter and my stepchildren are in their thirties, to old for having read it when they were little and since I'm now an expat, my grandchildren are not within read-out-loud range. It looks adorable!

I had never heard of these books, but I am very interested because our family has many children, and is continuing to grow at an astonishing rate (and we are planning for our next one, SQUEE!)!!
I'm PurlVerde on Ravelry, see you around!

I ran across the book for the first time while looking for new baby blanket patterns and fell in love with the baby wrap. I WANT!
