What happens when you combine colorful stripes with an interesting and ingenious shawl construction?! You blow knitters' minds with all the possibilities. That's what!

I'm sure that most of you can guess which shawl pattern I might be referring to with just the words stripes and ingenious construction. It's the Stripe Study Shawl by Veera Valimaki. This shawl pattern and I have somewhat of a love story...

I saw this beauty the day it came live on Ravelry. Now, I'd been following Veera and her designs up until this point and really liked most, if not all of her beautiful and contemporary sweater patterns. I actually had a majority of them marked as favorites already! But, that one lovely day in February, I fell head over heels for the Stripe Study. I stalked this shawl everyday (OK lets be honest here, everyday, ALL DAY!). I was enchanted by all the lovely projects going up and how quickly they were all coming in.

So started the long delibiration period! I was so obsessed with getting this thing perfect, I second guessed all the color combos I was coming up with. What yarn?! Which colors?! How do I want the colors to flow?! Light or dark color for the main color?! And, oh my goodness, I didn't want to copy anybody else's color choices! My friends, I spent countless hours contemplating what to do. I'd never had this happen to me before. This wasn't my first striped shawl!

Finally, I just had to step away! (Veronika, put the mouse down and walk away from the computer.) I probably could have knit a couple of sweaters with the amount of time I was spending browsing through yarns and projects. Once I gave up the fight of trying to find the perfect two colors, the choice became clear and I purchased my yarn.

Unfortunately, life has gotten in the way and I have been unable to finish my shawl to photograph in time and share with you today, so I'm going to torture you a bit and share my choice of yarn and colors a little later. With that being said, I also have the unfortunate news that this giveaway's sponsor fell through as well, but life is funny like that sometimes. So, when it gives me lemons, I always try and make a lemon drop martini out of it (kidding)!

I have for you today two skeins of some beautiful unclaimed yarns from previous giveaways. And, guess what! They're almost the same colors that Veera herself used in her original shawl. Remember…

Miss Babs's Yummy Sport & Sock yarn

GA57yarn

And, Anzula's Squishy

anzula

These two yarns are so lovely and they go perfectly together! It's yarn, pattern, and giveaway fate here folks. One lucky Grand Prize winner will receive the two skeins of "unloved" yarn and a PDF copy of the Stripe Study Shawl. Three additional Runners Up will also receive a PDF copy of the pattern.

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.

2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 8/14/11. What's your favorite Veera Valimaki pattern? Check out her cool blog here or Rav patterns page here and report back. I'm pretty sure I'm off to go stalk this one next!

I'll randomly pick the winners in 2 weeks and post the results along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

Ve

Okay I have 2 favorite Veera patterns. I'm in love with the simplicity of her "plain and simple" sweater. The color of is just gray (which is my favorite color besides green)

I also like her turmeric. It is so chic looking. Beautiful yarn and projects.

I can't decide! I love that shawl and different lines is very striking, and most of the sweaters are super classy. The twenty ten cardigan is fantastically dramatic.

I think I understand how you spent so much time contemplating colors for the stripes shawl because I just lost a chunk of time looking at Veera's designs. It turns out I'm discovering I love cardigans specifically the Sprout. It's amazing. Thanks for encouraging me to look more closely at Veera's designs.

amchart said...

How to choose a favorite? August Pullover and Modern Garden are so unique, and Folded and Summer Plum are classic and beautiful too. They are all lovely.

CeltChick said...

Well, your link to Veera's blog took me to your Rules page. That's ok, I found her anyway! I think her Hooray Cardigan is just fantastic, that would have to be my favorite. I like the Lost in the Woods shawl too, very cute! If I knit Stripe Study, I'll likely give it away on my blog -- I wasn't terribly impressed with that design. Different strokes, right? Please pick me, I'm AnnBan on Ravelry or email me: adevineATmywayDOTcom, if I win. Thanks for pointing out Veera's designs.

So far, I have only knit the Blackcurrant Shawl (twice), and loved it! Enjoy the Lemon Drop Martini, and take life easy :) You still made a great giveaway happen, thank you!

There's a certain simplicity to Veera Välimäki patterns. I really like the Okrankeltainen jakku. That is if I really have to name one.

Kamigaeru said...

I can't pick just one! It's a toss up between Plain & Simple, and the Twenty Ten Cardi. Both are in my queue. Must. Knit. Faster!

ChrisC said...

Pretty colors! I actually just finished making myself a stripe study a few weeks ago, and it's my favorite thing I've ever made. The pattern is fun to knit, goes quickly, and is just so elegant. Next to the stripe study, I think my favorite Veera pattern is the 2010 Cardi, which is next on my list -- I love the angled button front!

Anyway, if I win, you can give the pattern I'd get away to someone else, since I already have it, and I'll have to find something else wonderful to make with this yarn!

dclulu on ravelry said...

LOVE the colors. I have to say that I like Stripe Study the best (and far better than Different Lines, actually.) But I do really love her cardigans. Please translate Okrankeltainen jakku into English, Veera, please!

OMG! I will donate the pattern back for another giveaway but keep the yarn, how's that? My favorite is Different Lines, btw.

How does one pick from all those lovely patterns?? I am currently into shawls (and should be called an addiction cuz it's bad) and I like the pattern you are giving away and I also like the 3/4 Hap shawl. I like too many of the cardigans to pick... she is very talented. ^_^

I love Veera's designs! I've had my eye on the Celery Cardigan and Buckwheat for a while now.

I am in LOVE with the Golden Wheat Cardi, but I love the Graystone equally and I've had my eye on that for a while! I love this giveaway. I had been browsing beautiful FO's for this shawl on Ravelry recently and the color combos that I've seen blow me away! I'm PurlVerde on Ravelry, see you around!

I think Veera is my favorite knit designer right now. Last winter I knit most of her Twenty Ten Cardi (it's in heavy wool so I put it away for the summer), I'm working on her Golden Wheat Cardigan now and I'm planning to make the Hay Cardigan next. I think the Golden Wheat Cardigan is my current favorite if forced to choose.
Or maybe I just love any sweater that is pictured in yellow? A color I never wear?

Thanks for the giveaway!
