Maybe I'm aging myself here, but I'm still amazed at how the internet works in many wonderful and mysterious ways! I'm astonished at how easy it is to meet and form friendships online through various communities - especially awesome knitting communities like Ravelry. And, I still hold true to saying that knitters are some of the nicest folks around.
Since starting this blog, I've had the opportunity to meet many knitters and crafters from all over the world. Natalie Servant, this giveaway's featured knitter and artist, is one of them. Natalie and I met via my blog! She started following and entering my giveaways, and ended up winning one last year. We have stayed in contact since then and Natalie has come full circle and is now sponsoring this week's pattern giveaway along with her friend, Hasmi, who is the indie dyer of Rocky Mountain Dyeworks and is sponsoring the yarn portion. Here's Natalie sharing a bit about her inspiration behind her newest pattern collection, Summer in Provence:
What made me come up with my "Summer in Provence" series of shawls?
I'm always looking for inspiration, for new challenges. I'm a big fan of Art Deco, which is why my first lace designs were based on the Chrysler Building and the Eiffel Tower. I had so much fun running a Tour de France knit along (KAL) for my Eiffel Tower Shawl that I decided it should be an annual thing. I also wanted to continue with a French theme for the event. Late last year I began searching for the right idea.
I've been lucky enough to visit France a number of times and I have fond memories of visiting a perfume factory in Grasse. I also have a set of greeting cards that I've been hoarding because I love them. The box shows lavender fields in bloom with their characteristic rounded rows. All of these things plus the lavender growing in my own garden started me down the path to this series. I had also recently purchased a zingy purple fingering weight yarn from Posh Yarn in the UK, so I was set. The Lavender Fields Shawl was born and the design process just seemed to flow naturally. It has both of the rounded rows of lavender in the body and of the little lavender buds as nupps (or beads) in the border.
When I thought about creating an e-book of related shawl designs, I pictured the wonderful views you see when watching the Tour de France when the cyclists are whizzing around the country. I started a little list, and settled on three more designs: sunflowers, vineyards, and poppies. I sent Hasmi at Rocky Mountain Dyeworks some of my inspiration pictures and she very graciously dyed some yarn for me.
With the Sunflower Field shawl, I played around, sketching a little before I had exactly what I wanted. The shawl is very true to my drawings, with the big sunflowers at the top, the sunflower leaves down the middle, and the border echoing the petals of the flowers. Hasmi's Sunflower colorway in Bow Falls Fingering was perfect. This shawl was the subject of my Tour de France KAL this year. I've got to remember not to do another yellow triangular shawl for next year's KAL!
I've promised 2 more shawls for the e-book. The Vineyards Shawl is due out in the next couple of days, and I'm thrilled with the results. Once again, Hasmi worked her magic on some yarn: Glacier Ice Lace in Vineyard and Merlot. Mmmm, alpaca & silk. I knew from the start what I wanted to accomplish with this shawl - stockinette leaves on a vine standing out from a lace background with little curlicues. Then I topped that off with a border full of bunches of grapes. This one was a little more painful to design, but I'm so glad I stuck to my vision.
The fourth and final shawl in the series is due out at the end of September. I've got some great yarn lined up for my design based on poppies, and I hope that all the folks that have told me they're waiting for my poppy design enjoy it!
Thank you, Natalie & Hasmi, for being our lovely sponsors! Now, check out what you have a chance to win:
One Grand Prize winner will receive TWO skeins of the gorgeous and super soft Rocky Mountain Dyeworks Glacier Ice Lace in the colorways Merlot (purple) and Vineyard (green) and a PDF copy of the Summer in Provence e-book. Two Runners Up also have the chance to win a PDF copy of the e-book!
I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:
1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.
2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 9/11/11. Check out Natalie's patterns and tell us which pattern you might like to knit up.
I am in love with the Chrysler Crown Shawl. I have plenty of lace weight skeins at home that would be very happy to become a new shawl for me to wear!!
I'll randomly pick the winners in 2 weeks and post the results along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.
Sincerely,
Ve

Two of her patterns really caught my eye: Lavender Fields would look lovely on my friend Tosh, and I think the Chrysler Crown Shawl would be perfect for my friend Esther. I have wanted to knit something for both of those special friends, but haven't found the right patterns yet... until now! :-)

Loved the Lavender Fields shawl...it's amazing to read about how she got inspired to design her shawls! Would love to make one of them atleast!

Lavander Fields took my breath away. Absolutely stunning.
I really like the Lavender Fields pattern. The yarn is beautiful - thanks for the chance to win!
The Chrysler Crown Shawl is fantastic! So different from most lace shawls! I love it. :)
Oh, my goodness!! Love them all, but the Lavender Fields is my fav! They are all beautiful.
Oh, how beautiful. Do we win a trip to France to knit the shawls? If I had to pick which shawl to start with, I'd probably pick the vine lace because I love greens but all are so beautiful!!!!!!!!!!
Lavender Fields, and the Eiffel Tower Shawl. That Eiffel Tower Shawl is so elegant!

Lovely! I think my favourite pattern is Lavender Fields, it's so delicate and beautiful.
Must knit Vineyards Shawl!!
That yarn is gorgeous! Amazing! I love Strand of Pearls and Eiffel Tower.
The two patterns that are calling to me are Eiffel Tower (I love the swirly pattern) and Lavender Fields. So pretty!
I really like the rounder edges of Lavender Fields and lacey design of the Strands of Pearls.

I love the Diamond Sunburst Shawl. But the Tudor Ruffles scarf is also calling to me...
I normally wear shawls as scarves...so the chysler crown shawl caught my eye. Beautiful designs!
Hmmm I definitely like the sunflower one and lavender fields. Those would be the 2 shawls that I would do
They are all beautiful, but I really love the Eiffel Tower shawl!

Lavender Fields is lovely!
Lavendar Fields is just gorgeous. I have been in shawl mode recently and that would be a perfect one!
I best like the Eiffel Tower Shawl - neat traslation of inspiration!
The Strand of Pearls scarf is a great wearable shape. It is a little dressier than a scarf and easier to drape and wear than a triangle shawl.
I really quite like Tudor Ruffles acutally. Not sure it would look good on me, but I do like it!
I love the strong, clean lines of the Eiffel Tower shawl. The Chrysler Crown shawl is also wonderfully elegant and would be nice for dressing up an every-day outfit a bit.
I have been in love with the Eiffel tower shawl since I first saw it over a year ago!! It has that gorgeous art deco feeling, but it is quite clear once you look at it that it is the tour Eiffel.

Green and purple together is just about my favourite combination. I really like the look of the Lavender Fields in lavender. Pretty.
I really like the Sunflower Field shawl. I like how it actually looks like the top of a sunflower - not so abstract as the many lace shawl patterns that start to look the same.
I am in love with all things French. I have been wanting to make the Eifel Tower since last year, and sunflowers are my favorite flower.I can see myself knitting all five shawls over the next few months. I absolutely love Natalies's designs.
I love Natalie's patterns. I did the Eiffel Tower last year and would love to do the Sunflower. She is a very gifted designer.
I love all of Natalie's designs and have knit several. I'd love to knit the Chrysler Crown because it more or less goes with the Eiffel Tower (architecture-influenced.)
The Eiffel Tower shawl is amazing!
I love, love, love her Eiffel Tower shawl!!!
Simply stunning shawls, these really are works of art.
Oooh, they are definitely lovely! But I think I would go for the Lavender Fields. So pretty! sydney.cole at gmail dot com
the eiffel tower shawl is so beautiful!
Being a francophile myself I've always wanted to knit the Eiffel Tower shawl!

The Lavender Fields Shawl really struck me - that could be due to my aromatherapy training as much as my love of the rounded shape of the lace...
I like 2 shawl patterns: Lavender Fields Shawl and Diamond Sunburst Shawl.
Because I have very limited lace skills, I really like the Fast Forward but I think I could manage Diamond Sunburst.
I looooooove Lavendar Fields-the color the pattern-everything about it is beautiful. I would love to win!

I think Lavender Fields is lovely
Tudor Ruffles is such a creative idea. I can't imagine where I would wear it, but it sure looks like a fun knit. However, I think my very favorite is Lavender Fields.
I am currently knitting Eiffel Tower for my SIL and when I finish I would love to knit Sunflower Fields or Lavender Fields for my other SIL. They are both knit-worthy!!

The Eiffel Tower shawl is amazing but I keep seeing Lavender Fields in a deep blue with purple tones. I guess that's two for the queue!
Oh, I have had Eiffel Tower on my mind for a LONG time, even before I had tried lace knitting. Now I could maybe handle it.
That purple and green are calling my name. Please pick me!
As soon as I saw the Lavendar FieldsShawl I fell in love with it. I love purple/lavendar and any shade in between, and I love this shawl - the rounded bottom, the nupps, and the delicate branch-like lace coming down towards the ends. I just love it.
I really like the Diamond Sunburst Shawl!

I love the Eifel Tower Shawl! I would love to knit that up!
How could I have known neither this dyer nor this designer. Wow! I want to make so many patterns--but--the Eiffel Tower Shawl would be my first. Not only because it is lovely and classy--but because it reminds me of introducing my 89-year-old inlaws to France. My father-in-law walked all the way up!
Lavender Fields is GORGEOUS!
My fave is the Eiffel Tower shawl! Wow, I would love to win this. Just as an aside, it's one of my dreams to go to France someday. :)
I love Fast Forward - it looks like something almost anyone could wear.
Of the Ravelry patterns, I like Lavender Fied the best, and am intrigued by the pattern, as I've seen lavender grown in Washington State!
But I'm also intrigued by the new pattern called Vineyards Shawl, which isn't showing up on Ravelry's listing.
