The two winners of Becoming Art giveaway are:

Debbie in KY & Sarah

First one to contact me will be the Grand Prize"r" and receive the two skeins of winning yarn and PDF pattern.

Congratulations! Please contact me at yarnonthehouse@gmail.com to collect your prizes.

I ran across some of the most beautiful semi-solid yarn yumminess recently, appropriately named Sweet Fiber Yarns. And, I just knew that I had to find a way to get the yarn on the blog to share with you. I contacted the owner and genius behind Sweet Fiber Yarns, Melissa, and she so willing obliged to coming here on the blog today to share with you her story and beautiful yarns:

sweetfiberbutton

1. Please start by telling us a little bit about yourself and what you do?

I am twenty-three years old and I live on the south west coast of beautiful British Columbia. This past May I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (majoring in visual arts) from the Emily Carr University of Art & Design in Vancouver, BC. There I spent five years studying all sorts of creative things - painting, colour theory, printmaking and art history to name a few. Now that school is done I look forward to spending more time working with Sweet Fiber Yarns and expanding our list of retailers. You can also find me working part time at my mom's yarn shop.

2. Your hand dyed yarns are just so sweet! Can you talk a little bit about what inspires you?

Thank you Veronika! My inspiration comes from the colour relationships I take notice of throughout my daily life. I make mental notes of how they look together, how they change beside one another and the conversations they create amongst one another.

3. Do you have a favorite colorway or yarn that you offer?

Tough question! I can honestly say there isn't a single Sweet Fiber colourway that I don't completely love. As for yarns, if I had to choose one right now it would be Heirloom, hands down. A girl can't go wrong with silk cashmere!

4. How did you get into yarn dyeing?

I began dyeing yarn in my spare time (aka while procrastinating) during second year of university with the encouragement of my family, co-workers and friends at the yarn shop. Being a lys worker and having the opportunity to work with so many beautiful hand dyed yarns from all over the world has really inspired me to combine my passion for colour and love of luxury yarns. Since ECUAD does not have a fibre arts program I taught myself and learned through trial and error. Looking back I'm really glad I had the opportunity to experiment on my own, it gave me a chance to develop my own techniques and establish my own take on the process. Like any fine art, dyeing yarn requires both a feel for and understanding of all the working parts of the process and once you have those, anything is possible.

5. What will be next for you? Do you have yarns or colorways in the works that you can share with us?

What's next for me? Fibre shows! I will be attending Knit City in October and Stitches West 2013 next February. Up until now I've been pretty busy with school and haven't had the chance to really get out there and share my yarns with the world. I can't wait!

6. I always like to ask, why do you knit?

I love the entire process of knitting - the rhythm, the texture, the transformation of materials and the way it opens your mind and allows it to wander through thoughts and ideas you wouldn't otherwise have time for. Knitting is how I relax and unwind and I'm grateful that something so simple can bring me so much pleasure.

7. When did you learn to knit and who taught you?

I learned to knit in 2007 after graduating highschool. During this time my mom opened a yarn shop (88 Stitches) so I thought I'd better learn! With help from my mom and Judy Marples (Purl Bumps) I learned to knit quite quickly and haven't stopped since. YouTube has been a big help too ;)

8. If you were to knit and live anywhere in the world, where would you knit and live?

I wouldn't trade here for anywhere else in the world. British Columbia is such a beautiful place to live and has great knitting weather too!

9. What's been your worst knitting or in your case it could be a yarn dyeing disaster?

There's been a few days where I've had zombie hands thanks to some blue-green dye mishaps. I don't often get dye on myself, but when I do it's often a disaster!

10. And last but not least, if you were enjoying a favorite drink while reading my blog, what would it be?

An iced passion tea lemonade....mmmm!

Melissa's yarns are just SWEET - just like their name implies! She has sent over 14 skeins of her lovely yarn for you to have a chance at winning!! That's right, FOURTEEN skeins! Check it out:

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.

2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 7/1/12. What's your favorite Sweet Fiber colourway?

I'll randomly pick the winners in 2 weeks and post the results along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Ve
