giveaway #96

The two winners of the Madbird giveaway are:

Bridget & ely

Congratulations! Please contact me at yarnonthehouse@gmail.com to collect your prizes.

Let's be real… I'm always excited to bring you a new giveaway! But, honestly, this is one of my favs so far. Give a warm welcome to Sun Valley Fibers. Sun Valley Fibers not only does beautiful hand-dyed yarn, but they also have created a really cool thing called the Yarn Buddy. I own one and it is one of my most useful knitting tools that I've bought to date. I use it all the time, so I just knew I had to persuade these folks to come visit us on the blog! Here's an interview I did with Jeanette of Sun Valley Fibers and a little more about how the Yarn Buddy works:

1. Please start by telling us a little bit about yourself and what you do?

Well, by day I'm the wife of a farmer/landscaper, mom to 2 teenage girls (one of whom is a freshman in college, the other a junior in high school), and I've been a court reporter for 26 years. Things can get slightly stressful at times, and yarn keeps me sane ;-)

2. You offer a variety of beautiful hand dyed yarns. Can you talk a little bit about what inspires you?

We have a farm in southwest Wisconsin -- and we live down in a valley. I'm surrounded by beautiful woods, and have perennial beds everywhere -- I'm inspired by all of it!

3. Do you have a favorite colorway or yarn that you offer?

My favorite yarn base is the MCN, merino/cashmere/nylon blend -- any weight of it -- it is so soft. We're getting a new yarn base in -- merino/cashmere/silk -- and I'm sure I'm going to love that as well!

My favorite color/colors I've got to say Calligraphy and Waterfalls are my favorites. Calligraphy is a muted blue/green, and Waterfalls is a grey/blue. They are both very calming, soothing colors.

4. You also offer a thing called the Yarn Buddy and the reason I asked you to be a guest on my blog. Can you tell everyone what a Yarn Buddy is and how it works?

Well, a Yarn Buddy is 2 circles of wood with a spike in the center. How you use it is you wind your skein of yarn into a center-pull ball, place the center of the yarn cake onto the spike, and pull from the outside strand of the yarn. Your yarn cake will spin on the disk of wood, and won't land on the floor when you tug on it.

5. How did you come up with the idea to start making Yarn Buddies?

Well, we live in an animal-friendly house, and we currently have 2 dogs and 4 cats. Everyone wants to sit by me or sit on my lap when I do finally sit down to knit -- I'm learning to crochet, but I'm far from good at it yet -- and my husband essentially got tired of me getting so crabby when one of the kitties tried to take off with the yarn cake. In the summers George spends a lot of time on the tractors in the fields, and given a proper amount of time to ponder, this was his solution to my problem. I was, of course, happy to share his solution to my dilemma with our customers at the fiber events we attend, and George's Yarn Buddy has been a huge hit!

George has made Yarn Buddies out of at least 54 different kinds of wood. Some of the wood is local to our area, and others are rather exotic and hard to find, but all of them are a work of art, and one-of-a-kind!

6. I own one of your Yarn Buddies in cedar (my favorite) which I purchased at my LYS, Serial Knitters, and I use it all the time. I see that you also offer double spindle versions. Do you have plans to expand your line with any other variations?

George is being kept quite busy with custom orders, filling wholesale orders and trying to keep stock for us so I can list it on the website and so we really haven't come up with any other versions yet. I guess perhaps the variation we've come up with lately is making doubles using several varieties of wood in the Yarn Buddy, not just a single variety of wood like we do in the Singles.

I am open to suggestions, though, so send me any you might have!

7. I always like to ask, why do you knit?

I've always been a creative kind of kid. I was always doing crafts when I was young, like paint-by-numbers, beading, and lots of counted cross stitch. Lots of counted cross stitch!

When we moved from a house to our farm, we had no animals, except for the dogs and cats. After a couple of years George wanted to get cattle. Our daughters rode the bus to school, and the bus took them right past a pasture with lots and lots of llamas (probably 45 or 50 of them). One day the darling daughters asked their dad if they could each have a llama. George said yes. That meant no cattle, because our farm is not big enough to house such different kinds of livestock.

I knew we weren't only going to have 2 male llamas, and so the logical answer was sheep. George chose Icelandic sheep. After a little bit of time we had lots of fleeces from the sheep, and had it processed into roving and yarn to sell -- so I learned how to knit, (it was right up my alley!!!) we started attending fiber events, we eventually decided to dye yarn, and are now starting to add dyed roving as well.

We still have some Icelandic sheep, but only sell the yarn and roving in the natural colors from our sheep.

8. If you were to knit and live anywhere in the world, where would you knit and live?

I think I would have to say Ireland or Scotland. I've never been to either place, but they look so beautiful. That would be absolute heaven on Earth for me!

9. What's been your worst knitting or in your case it could be a yarn dyeing disaster?

Well, I used to be terrible at not knitting a gauge swatch. I considered them a waste of my time. That is, until I knit 3/4 of a sweater and realized it was never going to fit me, and had to frog the whole thing. It's still a project that is hibernating. Perhaps I will tackle that sweater yet this winter. I'd sworn off sweaters for a little bit because of that, but it's probably time to get going on one again.

10. And last but not least, if you were enjoying a favorite drink while reading my blog, what would it be?

Oh, I'm a White Zinfandel kind of girl, although I do enjoy Amaretto and orange juice!

Thank you very much, Ve, it's been fun chatting!!

Sun Valley Fibers has sent over two very lovely prizes: a grand prize winner will receive a Yarn Buddy of their very own (!) plus a gorgeous skein of MCN fingering weight yarn in one of the two colors below & a runner up will receive the other skein of MCN fingering weight yarn.

GA96yarn

And, I just need to quote Sun Valley Fiber's slogan here before I let you go, "Money can't buy happiness… but it can buy yarn, which is kind of the same thing." Ain't that the truth!?

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.

2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 11/04/12. What do you think of the Yarn Buddy? Do you own one? Would you want to? Any suggestions on variations?

I'll randomly pick the winners in 2 weeks and post the results along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

Ve

I've seen a product like the Yarn Buddy and have been very tempted, so yes, I'd love one!

I've seen the yarn buddy (or a very similar product) at fiber festivals and think it could be very useful. Especially for those fibers where the ball seems to fall apart quickly if you do center pull. I've particularly had trouble with linen and alpaca balls. I think the grabbiness of wool keeps the ball intact even when a lot of the middle is gone.

mommieof4munchkins said...

I would love a yarn buddy! Such a great concept :)

Zabbers said...

I put my hand-wound balls or small cakes in a bowl, but fresh cakes are really too big and fluffy for the bowl, and just don't look as good--I'd love to be able to put them on a holder designed for cakes, instead. It'd be great for more complicated things like center + outside pull for knitting from both ends, or for when the cake starts losing its structure, too!

BrownCoat said...

I've seen a yarn buddy and wanted it, but I just couldn't afford it at the time. Haha!

Maybe someday I'll order one, or if I'm really lucky, I'll win one. ;)

what a great product.

When I first read the description (two circles of weed) I pictured something like a spinning wheel bobbin in my head. Obviously that's not right now I've seen the pic on the tag in the giveaway photo.

Melody said...

I think it's a good idea.

Michelle said...

I've never seen the Yarn Buddy before, but now I know I need one! Between the cat and kids jumping on my lap while knitting, I'm always dropping my balls of yarn. What a brilliant solution!

Nena said...

My mom and I were knitting together the other day and kept fighting the ball from falling on the ground. After a short time we both gave up and left it there, joking that the yarn was happier there and clearly desired the floor more. I cannot do that at home, since I have kitties who would take that opportunity to make a yarn-spaghetti monster all over the room! So yes, I would definitely love a yarn buddy!

Julie said...

I would love to have a yarn buddy, this is what would preserve me from getting insane with yarn ball falling. That worth the try!

Beathag said...

I do not owe one. It can defenetly be handy sometimes. I usually use my yarn cake from the inside so I will not have a tangled mess. But this is a nice option if someone dosent wasnt to pull the yarn from the inside!

've seen things like the yarn buddy and it definitely interests me. I'd love to see if it could avoid that knot I always seem to end up with when I'm almost at the end of a ball.

Lcubed said...

The yarn buddy is a great idea - like stickey note pads or Tide sticks! We live in a "pet friendly" home as well, so I can see it would be a big benefit to not let your yarn roll on the carpet and pick up dog and cat fibers along with the yarn! If I do not win one, I would definatley think about buying one.

Wendy said...

What a clever idea, and using sustainable wood too. I have not seen it before. Ideal knitting "buddy" gift too...

Robin said...

I like the yarn buddy, but like a yarn bowl, I wonder how much I would use it. I'm definitely willing to try though, if I don't use it I have a whole knitting group that would love to give it a spin:)

Diana said...

I've been using a yarn bowl, but sometimes my cake is too big for it. A Yarn Buddy would be perfect for me!

jennybookworm said...

The Yarn Buddy looks pretty neat - it would be nice to have a pretty cake of yarn out where you can see it and it looks as though it would be easy enough to slip into a project bag if you have to go mobile with the work.

ypsiknitti said...

I am always impressed at the creative thinking of others. The yarn buddy is a great idea. I also wanted to let you know that the picture of the "giveaway" is beautiful! The stones in the background with the vibrant colors of the yarn. Thanks for the beauty and the gifts.

I've seen someone's Yarn Buddy, but never tried it myself. Looks great.

Ginger said...

That is so simple yet so genius!! I would love to have one. I always have trouble when I get toward the end of the yarn cake (pulling from the center) and it starts falling apart and I end up with tangles and this would solve that problem.

Gynx said...

I have something similar to those Yarn Buddies, but these look much nicer! I'd love one.

Emily said...

The yarn buddy seems pretty genius to me. I think I need one!

Kassia said...

Love the idea! Definitely good for those fibers that don't keep their shape with a center pull ball, like cotton, linen, and lace-weight yarns. :)

I have to say the Yarn Buddy does intrigue me as I also have a 4-legged critter with a yarn fetish!

mhchong said...

What an ingenious idea! I'd love one for sure!

I have a similar yarn holder from Craftiness on Etsy. I always use it when knitting lace. It makes life so much easier! No more tangles and/or yarn guts. :)

I love that the Yarn Buddy is made of recycled wood. So cool! I've never seen one but now am intriged. That would definitely keep the yarn balls from ending up as cat toys. : )

Nadine Knits said...

I would need a dozen Yarn Buddies, if a recent count of WIP's stays consistent.

Laura said...

The Yarn Buddies are beautiful! I love anything made out of simple unstained wood. I knit with a lot of lace and fingering weight yarns and it's nice to take from the outside of the ball so they don't collapse in on themselves so this would get a lot of use in my house.

historychica said...

I think the yarn buddy is genius. My yarn is always rolling off the bed or couch, or if I have it in something to stabilize it, my working yarn somehow always gets tangled on something. I'd love something that holds my yarn still without getting in the way!

Knittingdancer on Ravelry said...

I have never seen a Yarn Buddy but would love to have one. I hate it when my yarn cake collapses when I pull from the middle of the skein. I think this would be the solution to that problem. Thanks, Vernoica.

Rosemary said...

I would love not to have to chase my balls of yarn anymore ... I'm way too lazy to get up off the couch that often! ;)

Heather said...

The Yarn Buddy is really neat, especially the doubles, which would be great for when I knit colorwork or two-at-a-time socks.

For the single spindles, I'd like to suggest having a "portable" or "mini" version that could go in a bag or hang off a wrist strap. I'm often knitting on the go and every once in a while I'll pull my yarn right out of my bag while standing on the train platform.

C. said...

I never heard about these yarn buddies before, but I really think it's a brilliant idea. Right now, my balls of yarn are in a yarn bowl while I'm knitting, but sometimes, they'll move too much anyway and it's driving me crazy. A buddy would be good for my sanity!
I just added it to my Christmas Wish List!
And the yarn from Sun Valley Fibers (a company I didn't know about) looks very yummy, it's very tempting!
Thanks for letting me discover this company :)

Rasa said...

Clever. I've seen similar products and think it would be great for coton, cot/lin, silk yarns - those that don't stick well when pulled from the center. I really could have used one recently when I had a coton yarn that imploded and left me with a veey tangled mess!

Kara said...

I love the Yarn Buddies! They'd be so useful, not only for knitting but also for winding yarn. I often have to wind a yarn cake twice, once to get it off the skein and then right away again to get a looser, un-compacted cake. I just added a yarn buddy to my Christmas wish list!

Jen said...

Why didn't I think of that!

ChrisC said...

That yarn is gorgeous! I think the yarn buddy is quite clever. I use a yarn bowl to keep balls of wool from rolling off while I'm workgin wtih them. The only problem with the yarn buddy is that you have to wind your yarn into cakes, which I usually don't, since I buy a lot online and don't have a swift and winder. Guess I better get on that for when I win the giveaway ;-)

Lori ann said...

what an enjoyable interview! i'd love to try a yarn buddy, it sounds like a perfect idea. and the yarn looks amazing too, thank you jeanette and ve! crossing fingers here!

Lindr said...

I'd love a yarn buddy. I detest center pull balls because I always end up rewinding them when they collapse towards the end of the skein. And the cats have great fun when the balls of yarn tumble off the couch...

I'd love to try a yarn buddy! I've been intrigued since I first noticed the ads. Currently I take my ball out of my project bag because it's easier to knit with it out, but occasionally it rolls off my lap which gets very annoying. I love the company slogan too - that should be on a t-shirt or a mug!

I have been eyeing the yarn buddy since my friend got one. At some point I will have to buy one. It will be great for keeping my cakes under control.

meppybn said...

Jeanette's yarn looks scrumptious - merino/cashmere is my favourite mix!! and those colours!! At the moment, I use zipped plastic bags to keep balls from rolling all over, so the yarn buddy would be a great improvement on that! Maybe George could somehow design a stacking model for stranded work?

Alice said...

As someone who lives in a pet-friendly household, I think the yarn buddy is a great idea. I had seen them on Jeanette's site but hadn't taken the time to grasp how them work. Something new to save for--along with some of their own Icelandic Wool.

the yarn buddy is genius! I use a bowl now, and when the yarn gets too small and light to hold itself in the bowl, it comes flipping out at me. Beautiful yarn, by the way!

Beth said...

I had never seen or heard of the Yarn Buddy before, but I think it is a GENIUS idea! I've bookmarked the page...this is going on my Christmas list. :)

Drae said...

I've heard of these but never seen one in person. Having said that, here would be my concerns w/ design: is the buddie heavy enough to spin a large cake withoug being bulled across the room? Can you make them taller (perhaps with a thin "rest" between cakes for stranded work? Perhaps add a "tab" to the base to secure it under a couch leg? I really need to find someplace that sells these to test it out.

I have mixed feelings about the Yarn Buddy - I don't really have a problem with centre pull balls getting away from me, and using one of these would make projects less portable. However, I can see them being useful with delicate yarn (and I can definitely see how they'd be a boon for pet owners).

The Yarn Buddy seems like it would make ball-winding--and knitting from a wound cake--a piece of cake (pardon the pun). I love it!
The yarn looks lovely too:-)

I've seriously looked at these - on their site and from your LYS too - they seem so sensible and beautiful that I'm certain to get one sooner or later!

What great comments...I second them all. If I don't win, I think I must acquire one of these or cobble one together until I can afford a "real" one...

I don't own a yarn buddy yet but I'm pretty sure I'd use it. Quite handy when you have critters around!

I'd love to have a yarn buddy - I usually pull from the center but that just leads to madness when you're using laceweight or "grabby" yarn.

Wow, that yarn buddy sounds pretty neat! I'd be interested in trying it out.

It would keep my yarn away from my cats! I love it. In cedar, of course.

I love the yarn buddy. I like to pull from the outside so the yarn cake won't collapse.

I would love to try a yarn buddy. It looks like a great way to control my yarn.

I think the Yarn Buddy is a great idea. It seems like it would be a great way to keep my ball from rolling all over the place. Thanks for the chance to win!

I own something similar that was made by my husband's uncle. He specifically designed it to fit with Sugar n Cream cotton 1lb cones. It works great for that, but is too wide for skeins of yarn that I wind on my ball winder. I would love to try the yarn buddy!

I haven't seen a Yarn Buddy before, but it is such a clever solution to the yarn escape problem! I'd love to try one.

I do own a yarn buddy but have yet to use it as I'm used to shoving my project in a bag frequently

I have never heard of the Yarn Buddy, but I have seen it in LYS. I'm always interested in trying something new & learning a new technique. Just yesterday a fellow knitter showed me another way to cast on. Would love to have it & share it with my fellow knit group.
