giveaway #5

Hi, everyone! Hope all is well in your neck of the woods. I would like to start by of course, announcing last week's winner who is Heather from Knit One, Spin Two. Congratulations! You are going to love the Malabrigo Twist. Please drop me a line at yarnonthehouse@gmail.com with your mailing address. Also, we hope that you will be able to send over a picture of you and the yarn once it arrives so we may post it on the blog.

Last week I mentioned that I would have a guest designer for all of you to meet this week. Her name is Melynda (that's her in the cute red hat and cowl in the snow) and she runs a fabulous blog called French Press Knits. You can also check her out on Ravelry as FrenchPressKnits. If you have not had a chance to visit her blog or see her great patterns, you NEED to do that right now. I would say that Melynda is best known for her adorable self-titled French Press Felted Slippers. I think everyone and their mother are making these right now! Melynda so very graciously accepted my request to do a fun little interview with her by email. Without further ado, here are the 10 questions (part knitting, part fun) that I asked Melynda to answer for us:

1) Since you are French Press Knits, I think that we first and foremost need to know: How do you take your coffee?
Usually decaf- lots of cream, a little sugar. Oh, and of course it must pour out of a french press!

2) Why do you knit?
I love it. I could leave it at that, but I won't :). I have always enjoyed creating things, having a tangible product for my work. I love the satisfaction I get when I can stand back at the end of the day and say "I made that!". I enjoy any type of creating. In high school, I did a lot of sewing. Into college and beyond, I loved home improvement. In the past few years, the knitting bug has bit me quite hard, and every day I grow more and more passionate about knitting. I love the fact that there is always something more to learn- it's never too difficult, maybe just a little time consuming. I get no "I made that!" satisfaction from my job, knitting fills that void in my life.

3) Do you have any hidden talents or super powers? These could of course be hidden knitting talents or super powers.
I have never lost a limbo contest. I have a shirt that dons the nickname "Malimbo"

4) If your house was on fire and you could grab only 3 things before leaving, what would they be?
This is always such a difficult question. First would have to be the Bible I have had since Middle School. It is beat up and never leaves the house anymore, but in this case, it would.
I guess next would be my laptop. It's just practical (plus all my patterns and design ideas are stored on my computer... I should really get to backing that up!)
Last...let me look around real quick...ok, I'm back! Can I just pretend I have ultra long arms and can save my whole yarn stash? I feel like I may regret that answer, like people are going to remind me of something more important, but everyone needs one selfish grab!

5) Name one thing you miss about being a kid.
Just one, huh? Every summer my family would go camping in Ludington, Michigan right before school started. My cousins would all be there, along with aunts, uncles, extended cousins, and grandparents on both sides of my family. Most of the campers were people we knew and we could get anywhere we wanted to go on our bikes. Much time was spent exploring the sand dunes, hiking, and swimming in Lake Michigan. We had the freedom of adults with none of the responsibility- what more could you ask for?

6) What's your worst knitting disaster?
I've had many, and they were all from felting. When I was coming up with the French Press Felted Slipper pattern, I did a few prototypes before I even started getting the slippers to what I envisioned in my head. The worst part about felting mistakes: you can't reuse the yarn!

7) Do you believe in ghosts?
I believe there is evil...not sure about ghosts themselves

8) If you could live and knit anywhere in the world, where would you knit and live?
I'm living just where I want to live- surrounded by family. At this point a couple of my sisters have moved away, and if I could move them back here with me, I would choose to do that instead!

If I could just take a vacation to knit somewhere (which sounds pretty nice about now), it would be to Switzerland. My husband and I went a couple years ago on a trip through Europe and got to meet some of his relatives. They live in the Ticino region of Switzerland (right on the border of Italy) and it was charming. I did not knit last time I was there, it would be fun to go back to enjoy the scenery and the knitting!

9) What is your current knitting fantasy?
To have more time to knit and design... that's it!

10) And last but not least, if you were to be drinking a cocktail while reading my blog, what would it be?
Can it be a glass of red wine instead? Merlot, please!

Thank you Melynda for doing this interview for us. It has been fun chatting and getting to know you a little better. In honor of Melynda being our guest designer on the blog, I will be giving away THREE of her French Press Felted Slipper patterns (that's them above) to THREE lucky winners. Also, TWO of the lucky winners will receive 2 skeins each of Patons Classic Wool (see pic below). I picked out two really pretty colors for the TWO lucky winners: one is a beautiful amethyst purple color and the other is a deep olive green color.

This week my mother has donated the yarn for the blog giveaway. Thank you, mom! She has bribed her way out of being the giveaway model by donating this lovely yarn!! Since, she talked and bought her way out of modeling the yarn for you, I had to find another willing participant, and I found Lexi. Meet Lexi, my brother's girlfriend. Isn't she cute?! She was a sweetheart to step in last minute for my mom yesterday when I was photographing the yarn.

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1) Have an address in the US to ship the yarn to. I wanted to add a little more to this line and say that if you have a friend or relative that has a US mailing address, that will work. I will send it to them and then they can forward it on to you. See house rules for further details.

2) Post a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 3/7/2010, letting us know if you have knitted or are planning to knit these fabulous French Press Felted Slippers. Do you already own this pattern? Or, is this your first time seeing it? If it's your first time seeing this pattern, what do you think? Let's have fun talking about French Press Knits!

3) Please post only one comment to give everyone a fair chance.

Again, I'll randomly pick the winners on Sunday and post the results on Monday along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

Ve

I've had really bad luck with felted slippers for myself, but I do love the French Press Slippers! I'd try to knit them with no wearer in mind-- that way I'd be less crushed if I over-felt them!

I haven't knit slippers before, but I've been drooling over that pattern for a while now. I LOVE them!!

I've been looking at this pattern ever since the yarn harlot mentioned them...

You wouldn't think that slippers are necessary here in Arizona, but my feet are chilly right now.

mel said...

I love this pattern! I keep thinking "that is the next project I'll make", but then I get sidetracked with something else, someone else wanted me to knit. Someday I'll have these cuties on my feet thous.

I have this pattern in my queue, but like most patterns in it, it will take forever to get to it. :)

I've been pondering making a pair of slippers for myself - recently had to throw away my last pair due to an "incident" with my dog. These slippers would be a great replacement! I've seen them making the rounds on ravelry before, but I've never felted anything before. Tempting!

Ever since I saw the Yarn Harlot make the French Press Slippers I thought that I would make a pair or two for the women in my life, specifically my daughters, (17 & 15) my sister in law and possibly my mother in law. I love to felt and the felted clog slippers that I have made in the past are warm and toasty, but these are much more girly. I would love some new yarn to knit this for my daughters. Thanks for the give away!

Brenda said...

Slippers are my favorite item to felt. By the time they are finished, I give them away to someone who admired them during the process. The French Press Slippers I would have to keep for me! They are adorable!!

Elise said...

I have seen the french press slippers in many places and want to knit them, but I haven't purchased the pattern yet. I keep meaning to knit a new pair of slippers for myself, my feet get cold when I'm working at home by myself.

Carmen said...

I've made a couple of pairs of the felted clogs as gifts. These French Press Slippers are just so much more dainty than the felted clogs. I'd like to give this pattern a try. Thaanks for the opportunity.

I absolutely plan on knitting the slippers at some point, although I'm very nervous about felting. After I saw them, I immediately friended Melynda on Rav and she was gracious enough to friend me back!

And I love her bring me home hat, so cute, that is going on my needles next because I am needing to get a baby gift made for a friend. Love your blog

Hi,
My first visit here.I'm in my 70's and I knit to keep my hands limber during the winter, when I can't garden. I saw these in a blog a couple of weeks ago and thought they would be nice for Christmas gifts for the granddaughters next year. I love using the yarn that the pattern calls for.Your blog is great.

I am relatively new to knitting. I have always been a crafter and knitting is my new muse. I love it and can't get enough of all the great patterns I find. I have been looking for a cute slipper pattern and came across this one. It is really exactly what I was looking for to make some good office slippers. I love to change out of my heels at my desk but want something that doesn't look to 'slipper like'. These are great. Thanks for the offer!

I came across this pattern quite by accident about two weeks ago and immediately added them to my faves on ravelery with the intent to eventually make them up for my two sisters, sis-in-law and mom when the fam gets together for Christmas (a once every 5-10 years occasion). I really wanted to make all the girls slippers and immediately fell in love with this design. Of course, I'd have to make a test model for myself first. :)

French Press Slippers were my first only felting project. I love them!! It is thanks to Melynda that I found you! Your blog is fantastic (and so is your photography)! Anyway, the slippers are going to be my go-to Christmas gift for the ladies in my family!

I've had my eyes on these for a while. I've done some felting before, but never slippers. They look like fun!

to zuzu: the felted slippers above are super easy, fun and wear and look great! They were my first felted slipper project.

congrats to the winner of last week!

I purchased her pattern shortly after turkey day last fall and quickly knit up two pairs. They were so fun. (half a pair sits knit waiting for it's mate as well) I was just finishing adding the buttons when my mother in law dropped by. I did not get a chance to hide them before she noticed and fell in love with them. Boy was she suprised when they were wrapped under the tree for her, she was sooo happy and loves them!

thanks for the fun interview!

I have seen the slippers before, but have not purchased the pattern yet. They are having a class at my LYS but I will out of town when the class is offered. I love felting but have not ever tried anything that has to end up a particular size so this would be a new challenge for me. I just found your blog from a promo by French Press herself. Looking forward to learning more about you.

Great interview questions for Melynda!
Thanks for another yarn opportunity.

I haven't knitted the french press slippers (yet) but hope to do so very soon. As soon as I saw the slippers I thought they would make a great gift for my sister in law! So I'm hoping to get a pair made within the next couple of months in time for her birthday!

Thank you so much for this opportunity! I discovered this pattern a few months ago, loved it but wasn't sure I could knit that well so I didn't order it. I keep going back to it, wondering - debating. I decided I would take up knitting again soon and order the pattern then. Maybe this is just the incentive I need!

So sweet! I have seen them before, but haven't knit these yet, nor do I own the pattern. I have knit men's felted slippers before, so would be excited to make these!

I absolutely LOVE the slippers and they're on my list to knit this year! I don't have the pattern but I've seen them ALL OVER----they're a huge hit. I'm planning on making a pair for my daughter and myself.

I have this project queued on Ravelry but haven't gotten the pattern yet. My two favorite colors are dark purple and green, so wouldn't it be awesome if I won this giveaway?!

I have not knit these slipper yet - but have admired the pattern - the Yarn Harlot wrote about French Press Slippers on her blog recently and how addictive the pattern was. I have had my share of felting nightmares though! Maybe I would even keep these for myself.

Debi3735 said...

1st time seeing the blog, or pattern, love it, will be knitting it.

Liz said...

I've admired these felted slippers since finding them on Ravelry. Her slippers have felted up so beautifully. They are much more delicate than the other slippers I've felted before. I've always been intrigued, but have yet to get around to them (though they are queued).

I recently bought the French Press Slippers pattern from Melynda on etsy, but I haven't had time to start knitting them yet because so many of my friends are having babies -- I've been occupied with wee hats and burp cloths and such. With my own baby due in a few months, however, I'm hoping to get started on my slippers so I can have them in time to hit the hospital!

i've seen these slippers around, and think they are wonderfully cute!! i would love to knit them up, especially in that purple.....

I have made 2 pairs of these already, and love the pattern! But I would love to have another copy of the pattern that I could use for a gift!

I've never knit slippers before - I have been tempted to make the ones that were published in one of the CRAFT magazines, the one where you just know a bunch of squares, felt them, and stitch them together. Those would be kickaround slippers.....thee felt ones would be more "dress up slippers" for when company's over. (: so cute.

Amy said...

I would love to make these slippers. I learned about this pattern while in the midst of my holiday knitting frenzy. I would love to make a pair for myself. I also love the hat pattern the designer is wearing. The pattern is on her blog. The wool you are giving felts well.

A friend made a pair of the slippers for a Christmas present and they looked so cute! I would really like to make some for myself.

I have wanted to make this pattern since before I knew how to knit (I have just started). I found them on etsy and I just can't get them out of my mind

I want to knit the FPFS. They're in my Ravelry queue but I haven't bought the pattern yet. I haven't felted any of my handmade things yet just made things out of felted sweaters. I've heard the slippers work up in a jiffy.

Hi, it's aammyy (from the Oliver Hat test knit) I found your blog through Ravelry. How cool that you do yarn giveaways. I loved the story of how your man thought the yarn was pink. My dad is color blind. He's had a few funny color mishaps over the years.
Anyway, I love the slippers! One of these days I'll get around to knitting things for ME and when I do, I'll have to remember the French Press Slippers.

danielle said...

Hi! I did indeed buy the French Press slipper pattern and i was super excited to make them because they were SOOOO cute. It took me 2 nights to knit up both slippers and then i tried felting them the next day. I'm not sure exactly what i did wrong but it was my first (and last) time felting and they came out way too big and crumpled and weird. So i figured i'd felt them again and i washed them again but they were still too big and crumply so i dried them in the dryer, thinking surely THAT would shrink them...no luck. I ended up with two large and misshapen slippers that were felted in some parts more than others. Maybe it was because my washer is not a top-loader? maybe i just have no idea what i'm doing?

Lauren said...

I've knit one pair in a bright pink with green buttons, they came out pretty good! I had trouble with the felting because we have a front loader :( (clearly not better for everything!) I've got one pair in progress... that have been in progress for a while, because they are all knit but I have to sew them together and felt, my least fav part! One of these days....

i saw this pattern on another site that was doing a giveaway. i absolutely loved them because they are a slipper version of my most favorite flats! i am holding back from buying the pattern because i have too many UFO's right now and tons of other projects lined up. but i have been very tempted...

thanks for the giveaway!

Hey, this is such a great idea! And I think that it is awesome of you to freely give away all of that great and yummy yarn.

As for the slippers question, I have a funny story about that. My mother in law's birthday rolled around, and I was caught short on time. So I frantically cast on for some easy slippers, and as I came to the end of the ball of yarn on the first slipper, I searched for my second ball, and realized that the dog ate it, or it was still in the very back of my storage unit, which I would not be able to get to until we moved into our new place. So I ran to the store, only to find they did not have that yarn anymore. So I bought 2 skeins of another yarn, recast on, and made two slippers. As I went to felt them, something went wrong... The yarn I bought was only 20% wool, and 80% acrylic. ARGGGHHH! So grandma got two very large slippers, that had not felted despite 2 days of running them over and over in the wash.

Cheers, Tabitha

I'd really like to make these! I wanted to use leftovers from my Vivian(Ysolda's gorgeous cabled hoodie), but I don't think there's enough for my size 10 feet. They look so toasty for a Minnesota winter, though!

Love the French Press Slippers AND the Patons yarn! I haven't knit slippers before, and I haven't felted anything yet--at least, not intentionally...

Erin said...

Love these slippers! Ran into them while shopping at a favorite yarn shop and thought they were really cute. Bought the pattern because Melynda lives in the same small town that I work in. Funny coincidence! First try with slippers was not successful-too long and yet too small in the width. I did not knit them and sew them together quite right. Second attempt-fit and cute! Glad I have friends who encourage me to keep knitting when something doesn't work the first time. The slippers are too good to quit because my knitting skills are not that great!

I'm new at knitting. I started teaching myself last year and have completed a few things and even have one sleeveless cardi that is unfinished because I can't figure out the shoulder part. I have the French Press Slipper pattern AND I actually made one pair! It turned out to be super easy once I figured it all out. lol
Thanks for the opportunity to enter into your fun give-a-way! Have a great day!

Found your website/blog today when looking for new knit-loves. Like the layout and pics! Then seeing the slippers had me hooked in because...1.) they are felted and I love felting but haven't really ventured past purses at this point, and 2.) they are so..."Jenna"...my 15 year old daughter! LOL First immediate thought was..."great, that kid gets another knit job out of me". :) Love to knit, but find that I have a problem in that I always knit for others. :( It's probably my justification to the hubby that all the yarn isn't for me.
Enjoying reading your blog! And have now bookmarked. Thanks!

Love the finished product but not sure I can make mine look like hers. Thanks for your give-a-ways, it's something nice to look forward to during the "in between seasons" time!

I LOVE this pattern and have had my eye on it for a while. After discovery the Random Acts of Kindness group on Ravelry, I requested the French Press slippers pattern, and the VERY next day, someone gifted the pattern to me! Just received it, and can't wait to make them!

I fell in love with these slippers when I saw them on the Yarn Harlots blog. I'd love to make them! I don't have the pattern yet. They're so much cuter than store bought slippers and even here in Florida my tootsies get cold!

Tas said...

First time seeing a pattern for knit--shoes? slippers? Wow! I knew felting made things sturdy but these are the cutest slipper-shoes I have ever seen. I would LOVE to make them; I'd take them to work and wear them around in the evenings. I'm an astronomer, so there are lots of late nights at the office where slipper-shoe-facsimiles would be super appropriate!

p.s. Just love that BUTTON. Look at it. Really look. It's perfect.

echoesinthyme said...

I've never seen this pattern before, but I wonder if they would be itchy? Not that I would wear them barefoot, but if I did...would they itch or be scratchy? I may just have to try them out and gift them if they bother my sensitive tootsies. I like the simplicity of the design, classic!

Connie G said...

I love the slippers and am so tempted to make a pair. Unfortunately, my first (and only) attempt a couple of years ago at felted slippers resulted in one that was huge and one that was just right, so I'm leery of trying these.

I have knit 3 pairs of the wonderful, wonderful slippers. Two pairs were gifted and I was ecstatic to keep a great, orange pair for myself. The Patons classic wool yarn was great and I used the leftovers to make a big, felted bowl/basket/storage thing for the studio!

I have knit the french press slippers and am planning on knitting more. They turn out really cute and they keep your feet nice and toasty, but not too hot. They are very very comfortable. I wear them all the time. I still haven't put the slick paint on the bottom, but haven't had any trouble with slippage. I used brown sheep and am going to try them with gallway next.

I gave myself knitting lessons for my 50th and the first project was felted slippers. I still have them 8 years later (my birthday is April 21) and I haven' t stopped knitting.
