billicummings & Raya

Congratulations! Please contact me at yarnonthehouse@gmail.com to collect your prizes.

On this edition of YOTH we have a tremendously talented young man by the name of Stephen West aka West Knits. I had the absolute pleasure to meet Stephen back during the beginning of the year when I took a fun shawl techniques class that he was hosting while passing through my neck of the woods. Stephen just recently moved to Amsterdam and he was more than willing to come be a guest on the blog and do a Skype interview for us this week. Take a look...

Links and such from the videos:

- Our DELIGHTFUL yarn sponsor this week is: Hedgehog Fibres

- West Knits brand spankin' new site!

- Stephen West on Ravelry

- West Knits Book One collection

- Pogona pattern

- Flamboyan pattern

- A Verb for Keeping Warm - Blue Whale Shawl (not available until April for non-members)

- Amsterdam

- Knitting Brioche by Nancy Marchant

Thank you Stephen for visiting us here on YOTH! Come back soon. I also want to give a big thanks to our wonderful yarn sponsor this week: Hedgehog Fibres!

One of the beautiful new designs in the West Knits Book One collection is a pattern called Pogona, and the beautiful orange and green samples shown on the Ravelry pattern page are both knit up out of one skein of the fantastic Hedgehog Fibres Merino/Cashmere.

So, guess what I have for you this week!!

Yes, take a closer look! YOU know you wanna reach through the screen and give them a squeeze!

Two very lucky followers have the chance to each win one of the skeins of Merino/Cashmere shown above and the ENTIRE West Knits Book One collection in PDF format, which includes the oh-so-lovely Pogona shawl pattern! That's not all! Two runners up will also receive the chance to win a PDF pattern of their choice from Stephen's new collection as well.

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.

2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 10/31/10. Stephen asks,"Is there a place or time where you would never consider knitting?"

Stephen's answer: I always have a knitting project (or four) with me and I often knit in public, but I would never knit during a yoga or dance class. I am well known for my ability to sweat. :)

Ve's answer: I'd never consider knitting while I am swimming. I usually knit with wool and my items would probably end up felting, and I'm good at multi-tasking but I don't think I'm that good!

I'll randomly pick the winners on Sunday and post the results on Monday along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

Ve

Thank you for the chance to win!! I'm getting ready to start on Stephen's windschief (I'm making matching for my husband and son) and I would love more of his patterns. Also that yarn is beautiful!

I often say that I'll knit in a meeting but usually chicken out. I would say that I'd never knit while teaching, but I have while proctoring exams, so I guess that disproves my rule! Thanks for the chance to win beautiful yarn and other goodies!

I knit pretty much everywhere I frequent. I almost couldn't think of an answer. But last week when I had an interview with my current bosses for a promotion, I just couldn't bring myself to bring the little bag of knitting in with me. They actually noticed and jokingly asked if I would be more comfortable if I were knitting during the interview!

Tanya said...

what a thought provoking question! I agree with the whole swimming/yoga ban on knitting, but wouldn't have thought of them on my own. One place I probably would not knit is at a scary movie. I tend to be very jumpy and would fear dropping stitches at a particularly tense/suspensful moment.

marianne said...

ooh, those are my favorite colors!

I would consider knitting anywhere, but I might not actually follow through.

thanks for this giveaway! there are quite a few of Stephen's patterns that I would love to knit!

Oh, such great patterns, and lovely yarn! :)

LJ said...

i can't knit when my hands are warm. the yarn starts to stick and i can't control my needles. it's incredibly distressing for a girl with no air conditioning.

marianne said...

oh, by the way, I watched the second video, but the first one seems to be set on "private".

PLadd said...

What a great prize! Love Stephen's patterns. Let me see, I would knit almost anywhere---but I would never knit while shopping for groceries.

Emily said...

I knit anywhere I can even consider getting away with it. I even had a job where I had lots of downtime and my bosses would always want to see what I was knitting every day. Best job ever.

Beautiful yarn too!

BloreKnitter said...

hmmm... I wouldn't want to knit in a movie theater. It would be too dark for me to check if I have the correct stitch count.

torirot said...

What a lovely yarn! I'd knit with it anywhere...

Knittaroo said...

At first I was going to say I'd knit anywhere, but I have to agree on the swimming and aerobics/dance class (pilates class in my case). I'll add sauna to the list; the other situations I can think of are not ones I would realistically ever be in (extremely crazy rollercoaster ride, while performing open heart surgery...).

Rainlover said...

I could never knit, while driving, actually driving. I mean if I am backed up in traffic to me, thats just sitting there, but trying to knit at 70mph would be a disaster, wouldn't want my knitting to get into an accident.

donna said...

Fantastic prize! I would never consider knitting at work - except on my lunch break of course. I also don't knit while driving!

Bloups said...

I just can't knit in a car, I feel awful after 5 minutes.
Also, I really want to knit in meetings but most of the time I don't. I feel like everybody's watching me...

The yarn and patterns are beautiful !

Knitting while driving would be like texting while driving - at least for me. Great giveaway!

Cindy said...

Even though it would be very relaxing, I would never knit in church!

Becci said...

I wouldn't knit while walking the dog. Picking up his poo could get very messy! LOL

Phyllis said...

Hard question! I don't knit everywhere I go, but I would, if I could. It's usually more because my hands are full, that I don't do it. I guess I'd have to say that I wouldn't ever knit during rush hour on big city transport (thinking of Moscow Metro as I type that).

Deniz said...

What a great prize and fab interview!
thanks for letting us have a glimps into stephens design world

i take my knitting everywhere- except to the beach. the sand in Cape town is so fine that my knitting will be sandy forever. also i dont knit during conferences... i think its taking it one step to far. it will be in my bag though..... so maybe one day i might change my mind ;)

Avila said...

Beautiful yarn! I regularly knit in some odd places but I could never knit during a formal event - big party, wedding, at the theater or a classical concert etc.

Frankly Beka said...

Even though knitting relaxes me, and baths relax me, I would never knit in the bath. I don't want to ruin my project, or my bamboo needles. However, I do take my knit socks and arm-warmers into the bath for a soft gentle wash.

Love Stephen's designs and it's so great to see him since I'll probably never have the chance to see him in person. I would never knit in the shower. Thanks!!!

I knit all the time. I always have at least 2 projects with me - something complex and something I don't have to concentrate on so much. I did put it down for my son's orchestra concert, though! But I knit EVERYWHERE! While walking, standing, riding, etc.

Tanna said...

That yarn is delicious!!! The shower, my place to not consider knitting. There are other places I don't knit... but, I consider it. =)

Robin said...

This is the best giveaway! I love the interview with Stephen West. Here's hoping I win:)

Heather said...

I'd say I'd never knit somewhere that I'd get really wet, like Seaworld, the shower, while swimming, etc.

I don't think I'd knit during a job interview unless the interview involved knitting.

And right now I actually do have to be choosy about knitting in my everyday life, because I've got an injury that prevents prolonged knitting (or typing, or anything else). Luckily, with the help of my awesome physical therapist, it's starting to get much better. Soon I'll be able to knit anywhere I choose to again!

Ginger said...

I don't knit at the gym. I think I probably could on some machines, but I wouldn't want to risk getting it sweaty or dirty.

Too funny- when I met him I was surprised at how tall he was and told him that :) Even though I often have a project with me, I don't knit in meetings/church...I just feel bad.

never while snorkeling. :)

Connie said...

Is there a place I would never not knit? Yes. When I was working, I would not take my knitting to meetings; I don't knit in the bathroom or in the kitchen.
Nonetheless, I would LOVE to win the yarn and Stephen's book.

Lael said...

Well, I don't think I would want to knit in the barn during lambing - a bit too messy!

Erin said...

Woohoo! Love Stephen's designs! I've had Pogona in my shopping basket for weeks now, I just haven't pulled the trigger. I'm actually not one to knit All The Time. In fact, I often forget to bring a project with me (like soccer practice last week) and then I'm grumpy.

Kristin said...

Those are gorgeous yarns!

Pretty sure I'd never knit during an interview (unless it were fiber related!), or probably at the opera or high theatre....

Of course, those are amongst the more obvious ones such as exercising where it'd be physically tricky and my yarn get dirty!

bahaisten said...

Yoga is a great answer... probably would not knit while at the table during a dinner party.
I love Stephen's designs!

OzKnitter said...

Pretty patterns and gorgeous yarn!

I knit lots of places but would never consider knitting in the bathroom!

Jess said...

I wouldn't knit in the shower. I have also had certain times where people think it's rude if I knit, aka during a lecture or class, during church, etc. When I was a teacher I would knit during my breaks but not during class for fear of repercussions. Now that I'm a freelance writer I work from home and I knit when I darn well feel like knitting, ha! :)

I would never knit while driving if the car is going more then 20mph. I may have knit in slow moving traffic though...

And I really hope I win! I've been wanting to try more of these small shawls everyone seems to be knitting.

Cate said...

hmmmm. I don't knit while working; I wish I could, but it doesn't seem right. Ages ago I had a horrible job at the telephone company, which would have been perfect for knitting, but I didn't knit then. Now I regret that.

Liz said...

I love his patterns, so here's hoping that this is my week!

As for knitting, I don't like to knit when there is food involved - gets my yarn all yucky. So places like restaurants would be right out. I also have a hard time knitting on the bus. My commute on it probably isn't long enough - but I'm always jostled and can never reach a good stopping point.

Little Miss S. said...

Lovely lovely yarn... I would knit it up anywhere. Well, except at the loo perhaps... I bring my knitting anywhere but might save the really good stuff for when I can see it properly and bring plain stockinette st to the movies or concerts.

I always consider knitting somewhere, but then decide that it is probably not a good idea. Such as the bathtub or while driving. I don't knit at church, but am sorely tempted to sometimes..

It would be fabulous to win but if not (quite likely with so many people being interested) can I buy them through your blog?

Loved your interview with Stephen West, it's great to hear from this wonderful designer in person. I will definitely keep reading here, thanks!

I wouldn't knit in court. Much as I might want to, judges don't like it.

Well as everyone else I would never knit anywhere super wet, and I would NEVER knit while trying to change my nephew b/c he's a grabber and he has some Raunchyness in him. lol. Love the yarn. I've never had the chance to knit with a Merino or a Cashmere so i'm itching to win this one. Also the patterns are GREAT!

I don't knit when I'm with other people who are non-knitters, and it's a conversational situation. I've found breaking that rule a good way to make a friend feel like there's something more important than hanging out with them...

MelissaHB said...

I LOVE the yarn. Both colors are gorgeous. If i had to choose a fav it would be the orange but the green is a very close runner up :-)

I also love the patterns. Great job. Another designer added to my Ravelry Fav's.

The there's a couple of places i wouldn't even think about knitting. The top one (which would lead to divorce) would be in the bed room during certain activities.

Kelly B. said...

I also take a knitting project with me almost everywhere I go just in case I have the opportunity to knit. The only place I won't take my knitting is to exercise. I also refrain from knitting during any of the classes we offer where I work. The instructors get offended for some reason.

Hmmm - I wouldn't knit while driving, even though I'm skilled at steering with my knee. I also wouldn't knit while actively cooking - too much chance for splatter on my yarn - but would sneak in a row or two while something's simmering on the stove. Almost anything else is fair game!

I would never knit in a public restroom or public restroom lounge area. I've always thought those were a bit odd...I've never had the urge to "hang out" outside a restroom. The yarn is very beautiful and so are Stephen's patterns. Thank you so much for sharing with all of us and best of luck with the new move to Amsterdam!

heather said...

What beautiful yarn! I actually would never knit during any of my classes at university. I get so distracted by other people in class - texting, talking, doing the crossword. I can only imagine how distracting my knitting would be!

I could never knit in direct sunlight, say, out by the pool sunbathing. If my hands are even a little clammy it messes everything up, even indoors. Also, I will not knit during a movie at the movie theater, darkness = booboo's = MAD!!! Thanks for this awesome giveaway, I'd be one lucky gal to win any one of the prizes!

i would never knit in a situation where i need to or am expected to give other people my full attention. although i can pay attention well while i'm knitting, i think for people who who don't knit, it's somewhat of a social faux pas.

by the way, i love stephen wests patterns and i totally love love hedgehog fibers!! :)

I knitted once at my current job (I work at a shop that sells frozen custard), but probably won't knit there again. Despite waiting until I was on break, finished eating, and washing my hands thoroughly, I still somehow managed to get hot fudge on my project. Lesson learned...I will never knit while working in the near vicinity of stickiness!

I really love Stephen's patterns! I just won a MN State Fair ribbon for my Daybreak shawl.

those are great looking yarns and I've admired his designs for awhile

I wouldn't knit at academic talks - even if it was mindless I think that it would make others think that I wasn't paying attention and that would be bad for my career - and therefore bad for my yarn acquisition

i also wouldn't knit while exercising - i'd rather give my full attention to exercising and get more out of it and then give my full attention to knitting

This came up for me recently. My company was hosting a benefit concert and I knit a little bit but kept feeling guilty and that my boss was watching. I've knit in lab meeting and in lectures. I'd never knit in a lecture given by an invited speaker (unless for some reason I'd been knitting in front of them and they told me I could.) It seems like the best place to knit too, to avoid crying at funerals or weddings (I always cry) or keep from falling asleep during sermons. But I'm afraid of the lightning bolt shooting in from that stained glass window!

Anonymous said...

I knit most anywhere. I have to see though, so knitting in the dark is out. Good question. Thanks for a chance!

While I've considered knitting while driving... yeah, don't think I'll ever do that. I don't even answer my cell when I'm driving.

Linda said...

I would never be able to knit in church!

Samantha said...

You know there are so many places I used to think I wouldn't knit that I have: work, in the movies, in the car (not driving), at the pool. I mean, I guess I wouldn't knit in the bathroom, or around something that could easily make my yarn dirty or smelly.

Marti H said...

Like texting, I won't drive and knit! Hmmmm, maybe we need another bumper sticker.... to discourage knitting while driving.

jensimoneau said...

I always have a little knitting with me. I have often wished I could knit while driving my car...but I think that falls under our new "distracted driving" laws. thank goodness my DH prefers to drive when we travel. Love Stephens patterns. I've made several and several more are in the 'queue'

MyaStone said...

I usually have a project in the car so I can knit at red lights. Then someone told me they knit in slow traffic and hold the wheel with their knees. I could never do that.

Alissa said...

i am gonna go with knitting on the toilet... the other day my husband asked me if I ever had... and i was proud to admit that no, i haven't. go me.

i wouldn't knit @ job interview, funeral, spin class, hot yoga, public speaking,

melonkelli said...

I don't knit in the bathroom. (But that's a great place to peruse knitting magazines!)

Nena said...

I am a preschool teacher, so I can't knit at work. My attention has to be on the little ones, and I couldn't risk a curious hand pulling work off of a needle... Other than that, everything is fair game!

Katrina said...

I'm a midwife, and while I'd knit while a woman is laboring, I don't think I'd ever knit when the mama is pushing her baby out. Seems like staying focused on her and the babe might be a better idea...

Tracy said...

the first thing i thought of was: a funeral! but, maybe if it was for a fellow knitter who would've appreciated it...

kikine78 said...

I never knit in bed, too much other stuff to do in bed, like sleep!

Tanzi said...

I would not knit while doing something that kept my hands busy doing other things, but for those times that my hands might be idle, the place I would probably not knit would be a funeral. (It came to mind automatically that this might not be a great idea.) But I saw that someone else also mentioned this, but thought that at a knitter's funeral it might be OK, and now I want to make sure that people will knit at my funeral.

knitterlydesigns said...

What an interesting question. I would have to say that I definately would not knit while I am driving, but I would also never knit while cooking, I just don't want to set the house on fire!

Debbie said...

I knit in church except whenI am sitting too near the front. Have given my husband instructions to encourage knitting at my funeral!
Beautiful yarns and patterns!

Unfortunately for me I would never knit in a car, it makes me feel queasy :( I used to get sick a lot as a kid riding on buses and even in cars, but over the years I got better, but I still can't read in a car and I tried knitting last year but got that same yucky feeling... my eyes have to be on the road when I'm moving.
I can knit on a plane though, which I'm happy about, cos trips home to England are very LONG!

Marilyn said...

I never knit in church on Sunday morning...even though I want to...Amen.

There are many places that I would not knit. I need to be living in the moment, enjoying where I am and each element to it's fullest. That said, I do not carry knitting projects or think about knitting everywhere I go. I love knitting and the challenge it brings as well as the fun it can deliver but it does not consume me.

I'm knitting the Boneyard Shawl right now! And now to see the interview with Stephen is lovely. I'd never knit in the shower, although maybe just before blocking something would be okay. Otherwise, I like dry hands and needles and yarn to knit with. samm

This is an easy one for me - I can't knit while I walk my dogs. I love the colorways, and the patterns, offered!

I was recently unable to knit while giving birth, but have found that I can do some garter stitch while breastfeeding :)
great blog!

I'm thinking that the best place for me not to knit is the bathtub. I would hate to ruin a lovely project while knitting in the tub. However, I'm sure that hubby would get a kick out watching me do it! :o) lol

What a great prize! Also, what a great question - the answer for me is nope! Within the last week I've knit in bed and in the bath!

Love these yarns - thanks for the contest! I couldn't knit at a live musical performance - the players deserve my full attention!

hi V,
What a fun giveaway!
I would not take my knitting to the bathroom. Its so hard working with wet things.

The colors of the yarns are gorgeous! Would love to have one. I would never consider knitting in Sunday church service.

At certain times when I must concentrate,
Like in a choir, trying to stay on pitch,
I find it best to let my knitting wait,
Or else I will most surely drop a stitch.
I'm also sure that knitting at the wheel
Is an idea that doesn't make much sense;
If my attention's on turning a heel,
It might result in fatal accidents!
Knitting while cooking's something I have tried,
Resulting in this nugget I have learnt:
When purling as the chopped onions are fried,
You'll none-to-soon smell onions that are burnt.
May I conclude by stating this as fact:
I cannot knit when needed to react.

Amanda said...

No knitting anywhere in the bathroom, or anywhere where things are being deep-fried.

My daughter just had a school dance and when I read the question, that's the first place that popped in my mind. I would never knit while chaperoning a school dance. My daughter would be mortified (even though I could probably use the fiber therapy!).

Thanks for such a great giveaway! Lovely patterns and beautiful yarn!

I would not knit on the Sabbath, as we refrain from creating new things on the day that Gd is resting from Creation.

Thanks for the giveaway! The yarn and patterns look fab!

I wouldn't knit while running - but I wish I could. Any distance over 6 miles gets boring....

StaceyKnitsIt said...

I wouldn't knit anywhere in public that would draw attention to myself. I don't like to be stared at. Knitting at soccer games or any outside event or a restaurant would be fine. I do sneak in the knitting anywhere I feel I can and be comfortable while knitting.

Love those yarn colors and the patterns.

Unknown said...

I can visualize myself knitting with this yarn! I don't knit when I have invited guests in my house for dinner. Actually, to be honest, I probably would but my non-knitting husband has asked me not to pick up my needles on those occasions!

What a great giveaway this week!

Very smokey environments, or when eating something messy (like bbq, popcorn).

Megan said...

Love the giveaway this week! There is pretty much nowhere that is off limits, but I restrain myself from knitting when giving my children precious 1 on 1 time. Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

Sarity said...

I wouldn't knit while driving. I don't think it would set a good example for my teenagers.
Thanks for a great giveaway.

I knit just about everywhere, except the gross places (bathroom.) I love knitting in meetings as long as I'm not in charge of the meeting.

Unfortunately for me, I can't knit (or read or look down) while MOVING! Big time problems for the rest of the day if I look down for anything while in motion (car, train,...prime knitting time unavailable to me (sigh)). But thanks so much for your generous prizes - would be used while stationary, of course!

JanetK said...

This is a fascinating question! I have to concur with all the non-practical comments like swimming, driving, etc. But I have knit at meetings (though not in my current job), in church, on mass transit...anywhere I could get away with it!
(gorgeous yarn!!)

Laura said...

I would never knit at a funeral or a wedding. Though, to be perfectly honest, I don't KIP much when someone is giving a presentation/performance of any kind. I am always afraid that they'll think I'm not paying attention. The one recent exception was when I was at a meeting for our upcoming Open Studios - I figured that I was surrounded by artists so they'd understand :)

cindymen said...

I would love to knit Stephen's patterns with that yarn anywhere ... although knitting in the shower or at the gym would probably not work out.

Mallory said...

I don't knit while driving - okay, a handful of times, I've knit at a stoplight. But it's really not a good idea. I don't knit during classes or meetings unless we are, say, watching a video.

Too hard to knit while biking--my other favorite activity, after knitting. Love the yarn!

I love, love, love Stephen West's patterns, I've made the boneyard shawl, already. I would love to have his book. I don't think I would knit at a funeral.

I agree that knitting while swimming wouldn't be a good idea. I also wouldn't knit while playing a soccer game, not that I'd be allowed to even if I wanted...those needles would be dangerous!

Beautiful yarns and patterns!

Such beautiful yarn. I much prefer to knit at home, unless where I'm going is a casual sitting down kind of place. I just prefer to be comfortable when knitting
