giveaway #40

The two winners of the West Knits Book One collection and a skein of Hedgehog Fibre's yarn are:

Laura & Krista who wrote, "I think the one place I'd never consider knitting would be the bathroom. Just a little too busy otherwise occupied in there ;-)"

The two runners up who each get to choose a pattern of their choice from the WK collection are:

Kenoshia & Connie who said, "This is an easy one for me - I can't knit while I walk my dogs. I love the colorways, and the patterns, offered! greyowl (ravelry id)"

Congratulations! Please contact me at yarnonthehouse@gmail.com to collect your prizes.

I'm excited to have Kate Oates from TotToppers back on the blog this week. Kate and I met on Ravelry shortly after I had begun blogging and she has fast become a knitting/Ravelry friend and one of my most favorite knit wear designers. I think she's best known for "Tot Toppers", but her When I Grow Up line of adult knits is just as fun! Check out all her patterns here!

Kate has recently partnered with Katie of Yarn Love to offer some fabulous yarn and pattern kits for some of her most popular designs. One of the lovely kits she now offers is her Dindy Beret with a full skein of Yarn Love's Anne Shirley. I had the pleasure of knitting this darling hat this past weekend in the beautiful Champagne colorway for Jasmine. Take a look...

Isn't the color just the most perfect neutral?!

Not to mention how absolutely darling the hat pattern is!

You can see all the sweet pictures of Jasmine in her new Dindy Beret on my Rav Project Page. I would highly recommend checking out this pattern - especially for the holiday gift giving time coming up! It only took me a few hours to knit up the Toddler/Child size! I will definitely be knitting another one of these cute berets, but the next one will be for ME!

Kate and Yarn Love have put together TWO fabulous yarn kits to be given away this week on YOTH! Take a look...

One grand prize winner has the opportunity to win the following kit that includes: printed Dindy Beret pattern, a skein of Anne Shirley in the colorway Sweet Tangerine (enough yarn to make even the largest slouchy size), a yummy Lime Peppermint vegan lip balm, a cute pink TotToppers project bag made by Kate herself, a choice of any available tee from Kate's Etsy shop selection, and two fun books: The Little guide to Vintage Shopping and Knitted Icons.

And, the second winner will receive the following kit which includes: printed Betsey's Braids pattern, a skein of Marianne Dashwood in the colorway Forget Me Not (which we have not had a chance to knit this pattern in, but we think will be a perfect match for a single color version of the hat), a yummy Pumpkin Cinnamon vegan lip balm, and a cute yellow tangerine colored TotToppers project bag.

Two runners up also have the chance to win a PDF copy of the Dindy Beret pattern!

Wow! What a generous giveaway this week! Thank you ladies for bringing us such wonderful treats. Come back and visit us soon!

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.

2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 11/7/10. Back in April when Kate was answering questions from followers, Marlitharn asked, "You've been challenged to a duel. Choose your weapon: DPNs or Magic Loop?" I think that's a great question for this week's giveaway. Lets us know what your preferred method of circular knitting is. What's your weapon?

BTW, Kate's reply was, "I had to answer this question because it totally cracked me up! Definitely DPNs. I have only tried Magic Loop once or twice. Also, I really enjoy the looks people give me in public when I am using DPNs. Its like I am a knitting goddess and they can't imagine how things are coming together. I would miss that too much were I to use Magic Loop."

I'll randomly pick the winners on Sunday and post the results on Monday along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

Ve

DPNs! I love baffling people with how complex they look!

Anonymous said...

Weapon of choice comes down to what I have free that get me the propper gauge. I usually have several projects going at once, so I have to dig thru my needles while I swatch to find what I need.

Marlitharn said...

I am completely flattered! To answer my own question: I'll use either, depending on the project, the yarn, my mood, what needles I have available, and possibly the phase of the moon.

Rainlover said...

I cant get the hang of DPNs, and I don't mind magic loop, but I def prefer 2 circs even though that wasn't an option =P

For a duel? DPNs win hands-down. Way more points. :)

definitely DPNS! and awesome beret!!!

DPN's definitely!

kristyh1981 said...

I would have to say neither. I generally use two circulars. I use DPNs sometimes and have used magic loop on occassion but it drives me nuts. Two ciculars is my fave for sure!

What a great question! Nine times out of ten, I definitely choose magic loop. It REALLY felt magical the first time I tried it! But every once in a while I'll use dpns for a change of pace.

Magic Loop by far, I can't stand DPNs I don't even think I know where they are in my house to be honest, haven't' used them in years. I call them chinese torture devices. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the yarn with the Dinty Pattern.

kjt said...

I am all thumbs with dpns, and magic loop has escaped me.
I prefer 2 circs.

Erin said...

Yay! More Kate! I have to go with DPNs, just because I've never tried magic loop.

Theresa said...

A month or two ago I would have said DPNs, hands down. But, I've tried magic loop, which is pretty easy too. I agree though, I love how DPNs look and feel. I also am much faster with them (so far), so I'd resort to my trusty DPNs any day.

odessa said...

Hands down, magic loop! I mostly knit things with sides like sweaters and mittens and very often they have stranded colorwork, and I find it makes for a much cleaner knit.

Kristy said...

DPNs! It makes you look smart and talented when really all you are doing is making a sock.

Tiphanie said...

I'd have to say DPNs because I've only tried to do magic loop twice and both times were pretty awkward. I don't have a problem with DPNs at all.

Mercy said...

I haven't tried Magic Loop yet, but I do prefer DPNs over circs.

DPNs for me. I haven't quite ventured into magic loop yet - the idea is quite intimidating!

Judi A. said...

If I've started a project on a circular needle and am downsizing stitches, I'll switch to dpns. However, if I am starting a project with a small number of stitches, like 4,5, or 6, I'll probably use magic loop.

Kayla said...

I prefer DPN's!

Angela said...

DPN's all the way! They make me feel hard-core!

donna said...

DPN's every time. Don't like either magic loop or 2 circs. I, too, love the oohs and aahs you get when you have a handful of pointy sticks. And a far more effective weapon in a duel, I would think! (woolpiggy on Rav)

Kim said...

Magic loop! Although I still like having stitches on both needles so end up dividing them in 3 instead of 2. Seems to work well for me! :o)

Anonymous said...

DPNs all the way. UGH to magic loop!

Frankly Beka said...

I like to use DPNs. It gives me more places to put the project down when I'm needed. "Just let me finish this needle."

goodkarma said...

DPNs make me feel like I'm wrestling a porcupine. :) I used to knit with two circs but have since mastered the magic loop, even with a shorter needle.

Sarah said...

For socks, I prefer MagicLoop, it goes so much faster! But for fingerless gloves, I like DPNs as those are usually knit on thicker needles.

Holly said...

Well, I've knit a total of three things on dpns and though I love them, magic loop is super easy so I choose that when I think it will work with the yarn and pattern!

Anonymous said...

I love Magic Loop I don't have to worry about my stitches falling off the needle, or losing a needle.

Anonymous said...

I love magic loop it is the only way to go.

Amanda said...

I'm an equal-opportunity circular knitter. Mostly depends on what's not stuck in a project.

Knittaroo said...

I prefer circulars because they're much handier for take-along projects - much less risk of dropping stitches if I have to hastily stuff it back into the project bag. I can deal with DPNs and prefer them for socks that I knit at home.
In an actual dueling situation I can see the appeal of the many points of DPNs, but I think the weapon potential of circulars shouldn't be underestimated. They're practically nunchucks!

Rhian Drinkwater said...

DPNs every time! I like being able to brace my hand against the needle change, and all the pulling and faffing with magic loop annoys me!

Little Miss S. said...

Hard one - it depends. Definitely dpns as my steady partner, but magic loop whenever I make two socks at a time... Any needle is my friend...

Phyllis said...

Magic Loop! Although, I don't mind DPN's either.

lori said...

dpns, mainly because i've just been a little intimidated to try anything else. plus, i feel so cool and witchy with all those sticks in my hands.

Jen said...

DPNs for sure!! I tried Magic Loop and it just seemed so unintuitive and fussy to me.

I just started knitting the Tot Toppers Tiger Stamped hat last night. Imagine that!

I've never tried a magic loop but I'm thinking my DPNs would win.

Well my first choice is two circs, but if I am limited to the above, DPN's for sure! Lovely prizes as always.

Gracey is not my name.... said...

Since I just started knitting, I've only used circs. I do have some sock yarn on dpn's, but casting on is as far as I've gotten....

Ginger said...

I use both, but usually it's DPNs for socks (unless I'm doing two at a time) and circulars for everything else.

pigbook1 said...

DPNs for most items, though any project knit on anything larger than a 6 is just as likely to be magic looped

CarolynEll said...

DPNs! I just love knitting socks on DPNs. For hats though, I do love circular needles.

DPNs make great POInty weapons:) Actually I just find them easier to work with, plus the added bonus of looking really clever.

Magic Loop comes first, then 2 circs ( so nice to see and attractive) and then, only when I'm desperate DPNs.

Though I enjoy working with the loop, I would say if a battle broke out, dpns all the way. There are more, plus they wont get stuck as easily.

Magic Loop all the way!!!!

DPNS, just because I have never tried magic loop.

I'm about to start my first pair of socks and will be doing so on DPNs (hopefully!).

The yarn and patterns all look beautiful!

ACraftyKnitter said...

Definitely DPNS. I haven't been brave enough to venture into the world of Magic Loop yet...

Emily said...

I've only used DPNs, never tried magic loop (or 2 circs) but one of these days will have to give it a shot. Yesterday I was working in the car with a project on 4 DPNs and just felt like it was a whole lot of sticks. :)

kshotz said...

DPNs all the way!
(my verification word is "denting"...seems appropriate to the dueling question!)

Spikey said...

If I have to choose between the two, I'd go with Magic Loop. Bought a pair of DPNs once and they never even left the store. Tried them, did not like them, returned them then and there.

But my real preference is two circs.

Anonymous said...

First off, I love the Forget-Me-Not colorway. Gorgeous.

For the question, I fall into the "depends" category. For small diameters, I prefer DPNs. If there are only 12 stitches on each needle, Magic loop is too much of a hassle. But I hate the laddering effect that I often get.

For larger projects I like the Magic Loop for many of the reasons stated.

I'm usually a magic loop girl, but I'm just as at home using DPNS. I tend to use DPNs more for fingerless gloves, and magic loop for socks. I wonder why that is?

Beautiful yarns and patterns, as always!

I actually love both. I like magic loop b/c with one interchangeable needle set you get more options. But I think DPNs are easier to use, it's just that I don't own that many sets of them.

I only know how to knit with magic loop so that's how I would duel. :(

After many battles with DPNs-- and my fiance fearing for his life when I made the angry-crazy-face at the DPNs-- I decided Magic Loop was the way for me!

Denise said...

It has to be dpn's! I've only tried magic loop once and just couldn't get a feel for it, I felt like my project was being split in two!! I really love using the dpn's when I do socks and for hats too once I decrease. Love the giveaway, that hat is gorgeous.

kjgonn said...

After using both weapons I have to choose magic loop. it is less stressful for me to leave anything laying around with small children in the house when it is on circulars

I would use DPN's. I haven't figure out the magic loop method yet. It looks like too much work.

DPNs all the way. Makes you look like you're knitting with a spiky octopus of DOOM.

JoAnnaJae said...

I prefer DPNs but never seem to have the size I need. I use magic loop when required.

Sarah Kalkbrenner said...

I love my DPNs. I always get comments about "how many needles are you using?!" But I seem to spend more time moving stitches on the needles than knitting when I use magic loop so I try to avoid that.

Sarah Bear said...

I have to say DPNs because I've never tried magic loop--I would sure be bested, were I to choose that method, since I wouldn't know what I was doing!

jess said...

I've tried both... so I can definitely say DPN's. Besides, if it was an actual duel, you would then have more weapons, which makes you way more fierce. :)

Michelle B said...

Magic Loop almost always wins with me!

Though I do love the look on nonknitters faces when I use DPNs!

Amanda Yelland said...

I use DPN's for sure! Magic Loop was something that my long-time DPN-using brain couldn't wrap my head around. Now I also use the lovely 9" and 12" circs for things like socks and legwarmers. I can even use them for little preemie hats! Love the short circs but they can't do everything and the really tiny diameters of a hat whilst decreasing all the way down to like 7 sts. So DPNs for me.

Cara said...

I like 16" circulars. I haven't ventured into the world of socks yet, just hats. When my project gets too small for my circs, I switch to DPNs.

However, I've had a lot of situations where one of my children are rather mesmerized by the crazy arrangment of DPNs sticking out of a project, and, being children, they'll just grab the end of one and slide it out of its stitches so they can get a better look. Argh.

I can't even begin to imagine what they'd do if they saw something with loops hanging off of it...probably shove the loops over the head of a stuffed animal because it looked like a perfectly-sized teddy bear necklace.

cindymen said...

I have to admit to becoming a recent magic loop convert! Its the only way I've been able to avoid ladders.

Nadine Knits said...

Two circulars wasn't on the vote, but it is the method for me. Less cord and points to contend with. Two circs will take me any where that DPNs or Magic Loop could go. BTW, I love the Dindy design.

JennaKate said...

2 circulars, every time! :)

Definitely dpn's. I love how fellow knitters react to the tiny sock needles. My grandmother still doesn't understand how I can knit with those tiny things. She uses dpn's as long as regular needles!

It depends on the project and the yarn. I do feel clever using dpns! but love the ease of magic loop for portable knitting.

Love that Dindy beret!

DPN's are my weapon of choice. There is something that feels very traditional about using them. It always takes me a few rows in to acclimate no matter how many times I've used them though. Thanks for the awesome giveaway, this one is a big one!!

Rachel R. said...

Definitely DPNs - I've tried Magic Loop and I can do it, but I kind of hate it.

V said...

DPNs but only because (embarassingly enough) I have yet to try magic loop. I will have to try it now though, since I admit that I also have a bit of a needle shortage in some sizes...it looks like it might be a little easier depending on the project and the needles. I love DPNs though- I think I would collect them if I could.

And what an adorable hat!

Megan said...

I am circular needles all the way. Too many pointy sticks to hurt myself with or loose with DPNs. Thanks for hosting another fabulous giveaway!

Magic Loop for me...

Sangeetha said...

dpn's are challenging, but I am getting the hang of it + plus I don't seem to use them as much (maybe becoz I dislike them?)

InJuneau said...

I haven't learned Magic Loop yet, so it's DPNs or circs for me (or both within one project, if needed).

Brenda said...

I have to say - I use 2 circulars. The DPNs seem too complicated. 2 circs suit me just fine!
And I can use the circs for straight knitting too, so I don't need to buy so many needles in total.

Angela said...

Typically, I reach for my Magic Loop (unless those needles are in use already!) Otherwise, I would never get a second sock (or glove) finished . . . I get more crazy looks out and about while I knit two socks on one needle than I ever did with DPNs!

StaceyKnitsIt said...

DPNs. I have not yet tried Magic Loop, but plan to in the future.
The Dindy Beret turned out so nice!
Great giveaway, Again!!

I prefer DPNs. With magic loop it seems like you just get going and then you have to stop to adjust the cords.

Tanzi said...

I have yet to do either, but I've watched videos and they all look complicated! (I'm sure that when I finally get around to doing either that it'll be much easier than it looks.) But I like the idea of DPNs. It looks dangerous!

For me it depends on speed...if I'm looking to complete a project quickly then it's magic loop for sure. If it's a more complex project or if I'm not in a rush, then I prefer DPN. Also, if it's a lot of stitches I prefer ML because it's easier to keep from dropping them.

Hmmm, between those two options i would say dpn's. I have used the double circ method as well but have yet to try the magic loop...though i did buy one long enough to give it a go someday... for now though i have a decent collection of dpn's so...... smiles!

I learned knitting in the round on DPNs...so there's no turning back for me! :)

My weapon is Magic Loop!! I love it!

DPNs all the way!!!

Magic loop. Too many sticks with DPN.

That is one cute beret! My weapon of choice are DPNs, too. For the exact same reason as Kate!

I prefer two circs, but my second would have to be dpns. Great question!

Definitely DPN's -- although if I knew magic loop better, maybe I'd reconsider.

Trudi said...

magic loop. I love doing that technique, and would be completely unco-ordinated trying DPNs

none of the above... 2 circs for me!

An incredible giveaway this week, I agree! I like to use dpn's if I'm bringing the project out and about with me since they are easier to pull out or tuck away quickly. But I also use two circs often, especially if the item I'm knitting needs to be tried on a lot!

I prefer magic loop, I mostly knit socks, and I need really teensy needles for that. And trust me, I tried knitting a sock on 1.2mm (0000)dpn's, and got waaay too many holes in my fingers. I do love the romance of knitting bigger things on dpn's though. There is something about it that feels timeless.

I'd have to go with neither - I'm a die hard 2 circs fan.

Circs! En garde!!

Gorgeous giveaways, as always!

I'm still a fledgling knitter; I have to say, in a duel, I'd pick DPNs - because they sure scare the heck out of me! ;o) (I'm a magic loop knitter, as it's simpler.)

DPNs; my gauge goes crazy with magic loop!

Thanks for such a great giveaway!

Magic loop- I just recently started using magic loop in order to knit socks two at a time. I'm hooked. ;D However, before that, I preferred 2 circs for small diameter. I usually cast on with DPN and then switch to circs. I have such a hard time not twisting my stitches when I cast on with circs.

Definitely magic loop, I keep getting DPN's disappearing up my sleeve when I use them.

KnittySue said...

For sure my weapon of choice is DPN's ...my family sees me working on a sock and are in awe that in the end I have a sock to wear...they see me as a magician...LOL.

JaneD said...

definitely DPNs, because I can make my own! beautiful yarn and pattern :)

Kat said...

those yarns look beautiful... i would need to be shown either method, magic loop and DPNs...

I can use both and do...but if I have a choice, I much prefer magic loop! It is easier for me to "keep everything together" that way, and I don't lose a DPN to wilds of a couch or airline seat.

I would choose magic loop. I have not master DPN yet. There still getting away from and Im still dropping them now and then. Now Magic loop I can do two sock at a time Im about to embark on 4 at a time.

DPNs a million times over! I am currently knitting Kate's sugar bear cocoon, and am forced to use magic loop as I don't have a short enough circ, and it's killing me how painfully slow it goes!!! and yes, I also enjoy the looks I get in public... ;D

Jean Ashley said...

I prefer magic loop (for me it's easier) but I must admit that when knitting in public, there is more "magic" in DPN knitting than in magic loop knitting. I'm jashleyslc on ravelry.

Tricia said...

Totally dpns all. the. way. :) I probably just haven't magic looped enough to get fast with it. Love love love this hat pattern and the gorgeous yarns too!

akaemi said...

Neither one, I'm a fan of 2 circs! If I had to choose one of the two options, I'd go with magic loop as I can't seem to keep DPNs from falling out of the project. :-)

Always circular - Two circulars for socks 2-at-a-time or even hats, sleeves in the round...

Magic loop all the way:)

I thought I could convert to the magic loop but I'm so much quicker when I use double pins.

My weapon of choice is DPN's, but I only threaten to use them when my family tries to take away my knitting --to make me cook.

It's DPN all the way for me!
