giveaway #64

Even though there were only 10 photo entries in the contest for last giveaway's grand prize, I've learned that it's a lot harder to actually pick a winner based on choice rather than randomly generated number! Drum roll please... the winner of the Grand Prize NINE skeins of Quince & Co. puffin is:

saderakki

I really admired her photo for its composition, angle and prop. The colors of her shawl are brilliant and bold, and her explanation of how she "wears" her shawl in the comments was genius. A bookmark!! Love it!

The randomly chosen runner up that wins 2 skeins of osprey is:

Donner

Congratulations! Please contact me at yarnonthehouse@gmail.com to collect your prizes.

Happy 4th of July (for my fellow Americans)! The fireworks are a rockin' outside while I'm writing up this blog post. Unfortunately though I'm unable to see any of them. That's what I get for living in the woods. **

** I had some technical difficulties in publishing this post. I apologize for the delay.

I'm happy to bring you a sponsor today that is not only very talented at what she does, but also a treat to listen to. Introducing: Tanis of Tanis Fiber Arts. I first stumbled across Tanis's beautiful yarn after reading a post on the French Press Knits blog back in March. I knew then that I just had to contact Tanis and get her on YOTH for you.

I was so excited when she not only agreed to be our sponsor and guest, but she also agreed to do a video interview with me. Yay! Check it out:

Links and such from the videos:

- Tanis Fiber Arts

- Tanis's really cool Colours page.

- Example of the Mallard color in all the different bases.

- All the yarn bases offered.

- Sunnyside Baby Cardigan

- TFA knitting designs

- The Four Seasons Hat e-book

- I Heart Aran sweater

Thank you, Tanis, for being our guest and sponsor.

* If you did not watch the super awesome-wonderful-terrific video, shame on you! Kidding! But, I do want to mention that Tanis has one of the best laid out online yarn shops I have ever seen. So, I highly recommend visiting her site, if only for the lovely eye candy! Her colours page has all the available colorways neatly together in one area, and then if you click on an individual color, it'll take you to a page where it shows you how that specific colorway looks on all the different yarn bases offered. Really?! As an avid and well-trained yarn shopper myself, I can't get over how pleasing and helpful that is.

And, I'm going to be a mean blog hostess and not tell you what you have the opportunity to win this time. If you want to know, watch the interview!

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.

2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 7/17/11. Tanis wants to know, "What's your favorite weight of yarn to knit with? My answer would be: My favorite weight of yarn would have to be fingering weight, it's so versatile and can do anything! Shawls, socks, hats, gloves, sweaters... the possibilities are endless!" I have to whole heartedly agree with Tanis. Fingering weight just rocks!

I'll randomly pick the winners in 2 weeks and post the results along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

Ve

My favorite weight of yarn is DK. I like the others of fingering and worsted but I gravitate towards DK.

I like the finer weights from lace to sock. I have made sweaters from this fine weight and love them. Socks and scarfs abound at my home.

Elina said...

I like Sport weight, because it doesn´t take ages to make a garmnet out of it.

Ginger said...

I like fingering weight also. Even though I know it's not exactly true, I feel like I get the most 'bang for my buck' out of it.

EWeber said...

I'm with you - fingering. I can pick up a skein anytime as a treat and I know it'll become something.

Robin said...

I do love fingering weight, but can't resist Worsted weight for it's quickness.

JoAnna said...

Her site is gorgeous. And her yarn!

I too love the fingering weight. I love to knit socks with fancy stitches, and a good, tightly twisted fingering weight is my fav.

Amanda said...

I like yarn with some weight to it, like worsted weight. It seems so warm and comfy.

amchart said...

I'd have to say at the moment I prefer sport or worsted because of the instant gratification. So little time to knit with so many little ones, it's nice to actually complete projects in a reasonable time frame.

Mim said...

My fav is fingering. All other weights just aren't quite right when I'm knitting them.

Jen said...

I like fingering weight as well, though I am partial to worsted since it is a workhorse as well!

I do love fingering...but right now i have been using worsted. With baby #2 on the way...it's just a little easier to get things knitted up for the time being.

worsted or dk since most of what i do is sweaters

but hello any yarn would suffice for a yarn addict right :) ???

Dana said...

My favorite weight of yarn would have to be DK :) and love the way the site organized too :)

Marlitharn said...

My favorite weight depends on what kind of "kick" I'm on at the time. I'm currently on a wild sock kick, so I'm drooling over fingering yarns, but I feel myself edging into a lace-knitting kick, so I've started digging in my stash fondling my lace yarns. When the weather gets cooler I'll probably get into a sweater kick and start shopping for nice squishy worsted and bulky.

Brenda said...

I have to say: it depends!
Of course fingering is great for socks, shawls and small items. But I wouln't (couldn't) knit a cozy cabled cardigan out of it!
So I would choose mostly DK, and sometimes worsted for sweaters, depending on if there were details like lace or colorwork in it.

Thanks!
(goodstuff on Rav)

Kassia said...

"It depends" for me too! I gravitate towards fingering weight especially (I looove knitting socks!!) but I have lots of gorgeous worsteds in my stash too. :)

My computer is past the age of being able to watch videos, but if the prize is from Tanis, I know I want in! I don't have a favorie weight but I do have more Sport through worsted weight yarns. I get 99% of my yarn from thrift shops, and lighter yarns aren't donated often.

Lydia said...

definitely fingering weight-so much you can do with it, and so many choices

Kara said...

I feel kind of bad for admitting that my favorite weight is dk or even worsted. It seems so much more sophisticated to say sock or lace-weight, but although I love those too I love seeing quick results even more.

Beautiful shop, and lovely giveaway!

Sparkee Spud said...

Ooh I've been lusting after some Tanis Fiber Arts for awhile now.

My favorite weight is also fingering as I can do socks, shawls, scarves, and things out of it. (deja vu anyone?)

I'm a pretty big fan of fingering weight, too- I love knitting shawls and socks, and it works so well for both!

Elaine said...

Definitely fingering or sport weight for their versatility. Anything goes!

Beth said...

My favorite weight of yarn is DK when I can find it available in gorgeous colors. Often I end up buying fingering instead.

Anonymous said...

My favorite weight is DK as it's warm enough for winter gear but fine enough to not add a lot of bulk.

Evan said...

i would have to say dk. you can do so much with it. worsted is a little too heavy and fingering can sometimes be daunting, but dk is just right.

BrittanyLaine said...

I'd say it's a tie between fingering and worsted. I love fingering for all the reasons you mentioned, but I love worsted for how fast it can go!

Cary said...

I have just discovered my love of fingering weight. I never knew what I was missing.

Kristina said...

My favorite is sport. I love how versatile it is.

I do love fingering for the versatility and plethora of yarn choices. BUT I am currently working on a sweater in worsted and I LOVE how quickly it's going!

billicummings said...

Worsted seems to fly from my needles and is a comfortable weight for my knits.

Amber said...

It's hard to say. I prefer to knit with DK as it's mostly for kids jerseys and is so much quicker. I prefer worsted for hats and scarfs (nice and cosy). But I do like using fingering or lace for my own garments as I don't like bulky clothing.

Debbie S said...

I like DK weight, but fingering is a very close second.

Amanda said...

Tough call. I'm on a serious heavy lace/light fingering jag over the last few months, but that might change when the weather cools off. Lucky for me I don't have to choose just one!

Judi A. said...

I guess I like knitting with worsted weight best. DK would be second.

I also LOVE this giveaway bc as a fellow Canadian I LOVE talented Canadian artists :-)

I've been buying a lot of fingering and laceweight yarn lately. It's just something about the lightweight-ness of the garment it produces!

I don't have a favorite yarn weight because I like to knit various depending on my mood. Sometimes I really want a fast knit (using worsted or aran) and other times, I'm so happy to knit with fingering. I like how a typical skein of fingering tends to yield quite a big project though.

Elle said...

Fingering! It's like grabbing a Snickers bar in the checkout line at the grocery store... One little skein that brightens your day without breaking the bank. Plus, there are just so many gorgeous fingering yarns out there!

Julia said...

I really enjoy knitting with laceweight and fingering or sock weight yarns. I love the fine-textured cloth that results, and I also like the kinds of things one typically makes with lighter-weight yarns (socks, scarves, light-weight sweaters). But I'm fairly easy to please--the only weight of yarn I really don't like at all is bulky weight.

Kathy said...

I love fingering, for its versatility and the fact that I can buy just one skein for a project.

I gotta go with fingering - I love to knit socks and shawls, and this weight works for both (although lately I've developed a special fondness for silk/merino fingering!)

Christina said...

While I love fingering weight, my favourite has to be worsted. I make a lot of hats and mittens, and they have to be warm! Also, worsted weight yarn just feels satisfyingly substantial when I work with it.

Muchacha said...

My favorite weight is definitely worsted. Not too fine so I don't get bored when I knit a sweater (because it knit quickly), and not to bulky to wear.

Jane said...

My favorite is definitely fingering weight because I love to knit and wear handknit socks. You cannot have enough of them!

It's fingering weight for me, too! Once I figured out how versatile it is, it's almost all I buy unless I have a specific project in mind.

I like fingering/sock weight yarn best for it's versatility, though if you looked at my stash, you'd probably find more laceweight than sock yarn. I'm jashleyslc on Ravelry.

I love the versatility of fingering but I also love the quick progress of working with dk and worsted weight yarns.

Hmm, I'd have to say that currently it's fingering. I've only just 'discovered' knitting with it, and love it because there are SO many yarns out there, and you can make an entire item out of one skein so it's not too expensive! Lovely interview with Tanis - I just ordered some of her yarns and can't wait to start knitting with them.

Pauline said...

I love how Tanis organizes her website by colour. It's a great idea. My favourite line is Aran Green Label. I love the bounce in the yarn and it's beautiful and durable yarn for young active children. Tanis's Purple label is a close second. So soft and yummy.

Marina said...

fingering/sock weight because it comes in such fun colors! (and doesn't add to the stash....or so the myth goes)

Amanda said...

I seem to go through stages with my faves- summertime equals light fingering weights, fall and winter call for bulkier knits. But I've been spinning mostly DK weight right now and fantasizing about what those yarns will end up being so... :-)

I also love working with lace & fingering weight, mostly because I'm usually knitting shawls. I'm starting to see the virtues of thicker yarns though.

My favourite is fingering weight. Especially Tanis's Purple Label cashmere finger weight. Just totally lucious.

This may sound odd but I like lace or worsted, Lace is just so pretty and fun to knit and worsted keeps me knitting by being so fast to knit with!

Rachel said...

I love DK for toys and things but for clothing worsted just feels more...real! Solid and proper and squishy.

knitterlydesigns said...

Right now I would say fingering weight because you can do so much with just one skein of yarn.

I love fingering weight - you can make pretty much anything out of it, it's frequently washable, and you can always hold it doubled for a quicker knit.

I really love lace weight. I'm not sure why, maybe its my current obsession with lace shawls. But it is a good weight for most anything in Florida, as lighter seems to be better.

Sarah Bear said...

I like DK weight. It's warm when knit tightly, but can become an airy shawl, as well!

bitten78 said...

I am truely addicted to fingering weight, the versatility is awesome and you can just fall in love with a color and figure out what it will be when the mood strikes. I must say that for a relative newbie like myself sport weight for shawls is the way to go to get initiated into lace, much easier to get the hang of and quicker of course too.

barra said...

I love fingering for its versatlity for scarves, shawls socks and DK for the warmth it gives.

I think mine is also fingering. Try as I might to purchase other weights more frequently, I always find myself drawn to them. Plus, they make such lovely things with just 1 skein often times.

Hmmm, difficult one. I would say worsted. Although, I used a lot of other weights and enjoyed them too.
For me it's more important that the result looks good, whatever weight is used.

I'd have to agree with you and Tanis, for the same reasons! Plus there's almost always enough in one hank of fingering to make something!

I have to say, my favorite is Fingering, just like Tanis - it's so lovely and versatile, and there is so much variety these days. 100% merino to cashmere blends, and beautiful shaded solids and crazy variegated colors - they're so beautiful!

Sue Lowe said...

I agree. Fingering is lovely. Nothing heavier than a DK or I can't wear the sweater inside because it's too hot. Fingering weight also allows for more pattern expression since you have more stitches to the inch to work with. Picturing a beautiful fair isle done with some of the beautiful colours from the colour page is making my mouth water.

Christine-Bellylaugher said...

My favorite weight to knit with is sport to heavy fingering. This may be because my favorite yarn is a sport weight so I adapt.

Caitlin said...

I tend to pick up worsted weight because I know I can knit/crochet QUICKLY with it. Although i'm going to agree with many of the previous comments in that you can ALWAYS make something out of a skein of sock yarn...not just socks at that!

I'd also add that Tanis is JUST as wonderful in person as she is in a video interview. One of my favourite Yarn-people ever!!!

I don't know that I can pick just one weight of yarn. Sport weight is wonderful for how quickly things can work up and still feel delicate. And fingering is great for its versatility. And I have yet to meet a lace weight yarn I haven't enjoyed. So hard to pick just one!

My favorite weight yarn is DK but I knit with worsted weight most of the time. I have some fingering weight to knit some shawls.

I loved sport wt until i discovered finger wt for shawls and sweaters that are light and airy.

but being a yarn addict I love any yarn that is gifted to me.

I have to say, my favorite yarn weight tends to be the opposite of what I've last worked with! I'm a big fan of variety. I also find texture to be more important to me than weight, but if I just have to pick one I do believe my fingers have loved some aran yarns the best.

What a lovely interview! TFA is my absolute favorite yarn company, so thank you for doing a great interview, it was really cool to watch.

My favorite weight to work with is Aran, it's so satisfying to see the stitches knit up so quickly, and it's deliciously cozy... it just has everything I love in a yarn haha I honestly do heart Aran.

I love love love DK, it's the best of both worlds between the heavier and the lighter weights! So much fun.

Fingering for socks, anything else is too heavy for the climate where I live. And D.K. for sweaters and cat and kid toys!

It's a toss up between fingering and worsted. Both seem to be so popular in patterns! :)

I think my favorite yarn wt to knit w/is DK. It's still pretty versatile…garments, blankets, gloves, shawls, but not so thin that it seems like it takes forever for something to knit up.

Melamalie said...

My favourite weight of yarn is worsted. I like using other weights, but I love the size of stitches and thickness of fabric that I get with worsted. :)

I go crazy for sock weight or lighter yarns. They are so versatile and you can double, triple, etc, to get a heavier weight if desired.

I whole-heartedly agree that fingering weight is awesome. It truly is versitile and delicate.

Fingering. I can buy fingering without having a specific project in mind, and know that it will always be used.

DK weight is my favorite. It is versatile and knits up quicker than the finer yarns.

My favorite weight of yarn is DK. I love the versatility of this weight and especially enjoy to work with merino DK.

Fingering. I think almost any texture looks fantastic in that weight.

Fingering, without a doubt. I really like laceweight too :)

Fingering weight is also my favorite. So much you can do with fingering weight. I love the baby things I've done, as well as the shawls!

Thanks for the contest!

I have to agree that fingering is my favorite. The options are endless and there seems to be such a great variation in colors that you don't find in other weights.

My favourite is fingering weight for its variety, versatility, and yardage (I can make a usable project out of a comparatively inexpensive amount of yarn).

Ooh, a surprise! My favorite weight to knit with is fingering. I love knitting socks! I am making a shawl with fingering weight now, and I love how it is more sturdy than lace weight.

I love worsted weight! I tried knitting with chunky yarns and it makes my hands hurt.

Anything I can knit socks with, at least for the moment!

I don't know that I really have a favorite. It all depends on the project that I am working on. I'd say that I definitely use worsted the most because it is the most practical for where I live and who I knit for. But, I rather enjoy knitting with lighter weight yarns such as fingering or even lace. BTW, I was eyeing up Tanis's hats just the other day and have been dying to try out her yarns.

Phyllis said...

I like something a little thicker, but not all the way to bulky.

Maryse said...

Mine is fingering too! It's so delicate and fun to knit! Great podcast really... I didn't even know that Tanis is from Montreal and I love her patterns!

I enjoy working with all weights, but I especially like fingering/sock weight right now as heavier weights aren't as appealing to me during the hot, dry summer months. (I do keep a bag stocked with skeins of worsted cotton for dishcloths when I want a quick change of pace.)

Nuttygal said...

My favorite weight of yarn to knit with is....All weights. I know that that is such a lame answer but I just love yarn and knitting so much. It is amazing to me how you can take a skein of yarn super thin or super thick and make anything from a small sweater to a pair of socks to a hat or a scarf or shawl.
Thank you again for the wonderful drawing :)

Well at the moment I would probably have to say fingering too. Or maybe super bulky. Hmmm...

My favorite weight yarn definitely varies with the season. I love fingering right now, as it's summer, and I can't imagine knitting with anything too heavy. But come fall and winter, I love knitting with worsted, using my bigger needles, and getting through my projects much faster.

It's hard to say what my 'favorite' weight is. I hate working with fine yarns when the project is being 'fussy', but they're my favorite when the stitches are flying... :/

jensimoneau said...

I love the colors and textures available in fingering weight yarns. I've been knitting small shawls this summer and I'm enjoying choosing colors to work with. The options are endless!

JodyH said...

As far as the finished product, I love the look and versatility of fingering weight. But for just the wonderful way it feels in my hands as I'm knitting, my favorite is worsted.

Lael said...

It sure is nice that I can finally watch the videos - we finally got rid of our old dial-up connection! Favorite weight of yarn? I really like anything between fingering and worsted, depending on the project, although it seems you can do more things with one skein of fingering than you can with, say, one skein of worsted, so, economically speaking, I'd have to go with fingering.

I'm rather obsessed with the very thin yarns, fingering/lace weights. I just adore the versatility of it!
