Congratulations! Please contact me at yarnonthehouse@gmail.com to collect your prizes.

I hope everyone is having a nice summer! Here in the Seattle area, we haven't been getting much sunshine and have had plenty of gray skies and rain. That's given me the opportunity to knit quite a bit, but it would be nice if you folks in the heat waves could send us some sun rays. Whenever you get a chance!

Today I want to share a lovely sweater pattern with you - just in case you want to start queuing up your fall and winter knits. This beautiful design has classic styling with a touch of femininity to give it just enough appeal. I'm planning to wear mine with leggings, jeans, trousers, cords, and really just about every pair of pants I own.

Meet the Gramps Cardigan by the ever so talented Kate Oates...

Modeled by: Ari Cash

This pattern was so quick to knit and it's bottom up seamless construction is just my favorite! This cardigan is the perfect compliment to any practical girl's wardrobe, in my opinion. Dress it up or dress it down, either way this thing will make everyone around you ask where you got it. I've worn mine only once so far, but I got so many compliments I lost count! Check out more of Kate's work on her website here.

Along with this week's wonderful sweater pattern giveaway we have one of my favorite tried-and-true yarn companies: Madelinetosh as our sponsor. If you haven't seen or at least heard of Madelinetosh yarns, where have you been?! They carry a large selection of hand dyed yarns. The colors that Madelinetosh produces are truly stunning and I've heard of them referred to as "glazed" colorways. Somehow that word just describes the layering and depths of the hues perfectly. The yarns seem to have an iridescence to them. It's really amazing!

So, to make this the perfect bundle of joy, ONE VERY, VERY, VERY LUCKY WINNER will receive a PDF copy of the Gramps Cardigan and EIGHT SKEINS of Madelinetosh Vintage in one of the most gorgeous reds I've ever witnessed: Tart. What a perfect name for a colorway too!

GA65madtosh

That's enough yarn to knit up to an XL Gramps of your very own! In addition to the grand prize, two runners up will also receive a PDF copy of the Gramps Cardigan.

I would like you to do the following if you would like to be entered into this week's giveaway:

1. Read over the rules if you have not done so already.

2. Leave a comment on this blog post by the end of Sunday, 7/31/11. What has everyone been knitting in the summer heat or rain, in our case?! I've been on a sweater kick lately in addition to all the shawls I'm knitting. Do you have any fun sweater projects lined up for fall and winter?

I'll randomly pick the winners in 2 weeks and post the results along with the new giveaway, so be sure to check back. Good luck everyone.

Sincerely,

Ve

That's the yummiest red - it's like Christmas joy made visible!

I've found that little projects - like baby booties - and lace projects have been fitting the bill in this heat.

Oh my! I have been in love with this pattern since I first saw it! And I have been eager to try the Vintage yarn, too, what a color! This summer I have been knitting more shawls than anything else, quite addicting...

What a great colour. Lovely. I've been knitting socks and socks and socks for Christmas presents. Perfect small projects to bring anywhere and easy to work on. When fall comes the focus will change and I will want to make thick woollen things for myself.

SQUEEEEEE I LOVE that color, love love love!! And the sweater is so delish I am working on one right now, only problem is I think I picked a size smaller than I should have, guess I need to go workout!

I've had the Jacqueline sweater from Knitty on the needles throughout the past two or three weeks--despite several hot, muggy spells! I am dreaming of cooler weather, and maybe wishful knitting will work some magic for me! Summer is the time to knit for FALL! :)

I just bought some Madelintosh Sock in Tart and agree it is beautiful.

I have spent most of the summer so far knitting presents for my sister and nephews in the southern hemisphere (where of course it is winter right now). Luckily I had a visitor who could take it back before it gets too warm again.

I have several nice cardigan patterns in the queue - need to commit to one of them before soon, so that I have something nice to wear when it gets cooler again.

I've been trying to conquer some socks this summer. I have actually finished on full sock and started the second one tonight. I currently have enough yarn for a couple more pairs. I'm loving it!

Here, summer have some 35 degrees C, so it's not nice to knit ... But, with the help of air conditioning, I can knit for autumn: some berets, a cardigan (Concuro from Berooco) ... belimeda@gmail.com

marianne said...

what!! a sweater amount of MadTosh Vintage in Tart and a gorgeous cabled cardigan pattern!?!?

I've got a fingering-weight sweater and a fingering-weight scarf on the needles and just cast on for a fingering-weight shawl. never mind the fingering-weight sock that has been languishing for years. a worsted-weight cardigan is exactly what I need. yes.

thanks for this amazing chance to win! :D

I seem to be on a finishing kick this summer. Rather than start something new, I keep picking up WIPs and putting the finishing touches on. Feels good to only work a little and have something to show for it!

Anonymous said...

I love red of most hues! My summer knitting has been mostly socks and one silk/linen pullover I hope to have it finished by my birthday on July 31

Amanda said...

I've been working on an uncharacteristically large number of socks and a couple of summery tops.

As far as plans for fall knitting, Gramps just made the queue.

Jessica Powers said...

I've yet to see Tart in person, but I'm pretty sure I'd take home a ton if I did! I'm still working on my Goodale, started in Feb or March, as well as a Tea Leaves - but trying to finish these two cardis and do sample and gift knitting is killing me - I just want to start a lace shawl!

Fait said...

What a stunning red! I love red it's abolutley my color since i was a little girl :) And i'm still missing a red cardigan.
But this summer i was knitting one shawl after the other. But our German summer was since now a little bit rainy and not so hot. So i already think about the next sweater or cardigan i could knit in September to got it ready for autumn. Probably this will be my start up project: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/enelya-linwelin-sleeved-mantelet

How beautiful! I just finished up a laceweight cardigan, am finishing up two shawls and a blanket, and the rest of my summer will go to starting Christmas knitting!

I have been all about the quick knits - hats mostly. I also have a cotton baby blanket that isn't too stifling to work with.

What a beautiful cardi and yarn! I've been knitting small projects this summer - scarves, dishcloths, socks. Just cast on Miami Beach Shawl.

Tanna said...

LOVE that red.

Knitting Christmas stockings, shawl and cardigans... trying to think cool thoughts!

Jess said...

I think you may just be some type of knitting bot, you're amazing with how many things you finish!!

I've been knitting on a shrug/shawl/cowl hybrid (Hari) forever now b/c I keep picking it up and putting it down. Then I am also test knitting a shrug to use as a KAL pattern with my yarns right now, and after that I'm going to knit Rebecca Danger's Jerry the Musical Monkey for my son's 2nd birthday. Mostly though, I've been spinning for Tour de Fleece lately. :)

Right now, my I'm working on a lot of things, but my main project is the Evenstar Shawl by Susan Pandorf. Once I get that off the needles I want to start a sweater for me. I'm thinking about the Cricket Sweater by Wendy Baker from "Knitting for Him".

Holy cow that yarn is gorgeous! Madelinetosh is on my list of yarns to try and has been for quite a while. I just can't remember the last time I bought yarn. I'm currently knitting a sample sweater out of KFI's new yarn line Juniper Moon Farm. It's crazy soft and lovely, but it's a huge, bulky weight cardi. It's so hot on my lap! But it must be done by the end of August and so I plug away!

I would be happy to send you some of the 100F+ weather we are having here in Nebraska! As for sweater knitting, I have a few lined up for the cooler days ahead! I've never tried Madelinetosh but everyone is always raving about it! I think it would be an excellent yarn for the fall season!

Jen said...

I'm knitting the Socks with pints on and the Emma Shrug - soon after I'll move to baby knits!

Frankly Beka said...

Several of my friends are expecting mothers, so I am spending a lot of time working on baby items. Most of them are tiny enough to not be a heat issue during the Summer. As for upcoming Fall projects, I'm designing and test knitting a scarf. Hopefully I can focus long enough to finish one before the weather gets too chill.

Zabbers said...

Oh my gosh, that's the best prize ever. I haven't been knitting much, it's so hot--I had been working on a linen dress, but that got put on hold when I realized I wasn't going to get it done in time for what I wanted it for. Otherwise, little things: an ipod cozy, a hot pad... But really what I have been doing is spinning, which is my new obsession, and strangely ok in the heat. I would gladly gladly gladly send you about 25% of this heat. Please take it.

Mim said...

I've been knitting socks, necklaces, squares for a quilt. Do you see a theme here. Small projects. When it gets hot, I can't stand lots of stuff on me or wool in my hands. I love Madelinetosh and that sweater pattern is great.

Sarah.Crochet said...

I've been knitting squares for a blanket I am making for charity... I also knit a hat!

That red is beautiful! Hope I win!

Susan said...

This is so beautiful! I've been knitting shawls like crazy...of course I have a deadline -- my wedding next year!

Liz said...

I've been finishing up some knitted items for a new baby that my friends will be having in August - blanket, toy monster, sweater. But it is hot here, so my "need to knit but too hot for blanket" knitting is a super light lace scarf.

This pattern has been in my queue for a little while now. I love it! The Vintage yarn would be *perfect* for it! (drool)

Lately I've been knitting shawlettes and socks. It's too stinking hot for anything else. ;)

That's a beautiful pattern. Throughout the summer, I've been finishing smaller projects like socks and things. Soon I'm going to get started on some birthday presents for friends because two of my best friends birthdays are at the end of the summer.

Wow what an amazing giveaway! I have coveted Madelinetosh in Tart for a long time. I've never tried the yarn but that red is so gorgeous that I love every project I've seen made with it.

I've been working on Valencia by Chrissy Gardiner for my summer knitting in a wool/cotton blend yarn that is a nice grapey purple. I'm to the waist shaping now and can't wait to wear it. I've also been doing lots of baby knits for the plethora of babies that seem to be forming around me. It makes for great summer knitting too since all of them are small. For winter I just took a fair isle class and am knitting up my first colorwork mitts. I'm super proud of the one I've done so far and look forward to their warmth on my hands this winter.

Cheers-Nina (aka Maegwin on Ravelry)

Amazingly enough, I've been working on a blanket - crochet, though, not knitting. A dear friend is having a baby and every baby should have a handmade blanket - no matter how hot it is outside!

I’ve been knitting some cabled wool leggings in the summer heat. So NOT suitable to the weather, but it was my first test knit and I was very excited for the opportunity. I’ve since moved on to a baby SUMMER dress and some baby sweaters. Nice that the project stays off the lap. I’ve heard of Madelinetosh, but I must confess I’ve not ever knit with it. I started a blanket squares group on facebook and have been knitting 10x10 or 10x20 squares. So far it has been fun but a little time consuming.

I have also started on an MMario Vampire W(h)ine shawl. This one is currently on the back burner.

For the fall and winter. I have 3 shawls I would like to do, I have one I need to finish up, and I am working on a strawberry dress design that I am writing and knitting up. Can't wait for that one.

I also have one Debbie Bliss Sweater I want to make for my mother that has TONS of cables.

BTW that sweater and the yarn are to die for. I'd give my soul to win this one. (shhhh) lol

I've been knitting all sorts of things this summer - I don't let the heat slow me down at all! A tank top for me, a sweater for my 9 month old (the baby version of the Gramps sweater actually...), some felted slippers for my sister-in-law, and the Whisper Cardi.

Cary said...

The weather doesn't really have an impact on what I choose to know. I usually spend Jan-June knitting whatever I want. As soon as July comes I start stressing about Christmas knitting. So regardless of the heat I start working on what I want to gift this year, whether it be a washcloth for a coworker or a vest for my sister.

I'm also on a sweater kick - except that they are sweaters for my baby granddaughter! :-) Just bought some delicious handdyed yarn that my cousin dished and am looking for the perfect pattern to do it up. Would LOVE to win that pattern and that OMG drop dead gorgeous TART yarn. Yummy!

Our last couple of trips to canada (hubby for work me tagging along) led us to be near a cute yarn shop walking distance for me. I have a sweater lined up for winter knitting. It uses yarn and pattern by Sirdar that i could not find our way.
I love having projects lined up for cold wet WA winters! It is nice as well to have things lined up with the economy, :)

Right now i am working on a shawl as well as a ton of washcloth/dishcloths for fall craft fairs with my homemade soaps.

What a wonderful looking sweater, love the cables!

Kate's patterns are delightful and she has such wonderful pattern support, this pattern is edging out others in the queue for fall knitting. I'm using my summer knitting time to knit socks for Christmas presents. That tart color is tdf, which isn't surprising from madtosh!

goodkarma said...

I love Gramps and I love MadTosh. Tart is such a perfect red. Please sign me up for the contest! This summer I've been knitting cottony cardis for my little girls but I'm really looking forward to woolly fall knitting. Who am I kidding, I wish summer would just start already! First Seattle summer ever...

That is the prettiest red yarn! Makes me WANT to knit a sweater even in this heat :)
I'm doing my first shawl (part of a KAL) this summer! Yay!

I love that color red. I have been working on a baby blanket. I have less than 2 weeks until the baby comes. I hope I can finish it in time.

Well, i have been knitting lots of baby things. Everyone I know is pregnant. But besides that, I have been working on a pattern for a little lace bolero.

Like so many others, I seem to be addicted to shawls this summer. I'm a total cardigan slut all year round though, so you can imagine the amount of drool on my keyboard right now!

I just finished knitting Wendyknits' Summer Mystery Shawlette and I'm knitting Rebecca Danger's Louie the Lovebot right now. Thanks for the chance to win!

Debbie said...

LOVE LOVE LOVE that colorway! I have been knitting shawls and no end in sight (the gift queue is quite long) so the idea of such a gorgeous sweater is very enticing!

TopHat said...

I've been knitting legwarmers. I know that sounds like it's not a good summer project... and it's not. But I'm knitting them for someone who bought the yarn and pattern and so I'm knitting them for her.

nançoise said...

I,ve been working on winter sweaters and shawls during the latest heat wave! If I'm going to be stuck inside in the AC I might as well get ready for colder weather!

Oh my oh my oh my, perfect yarn, perfect pattern, that is going to make some lucky person's day!

This is wonderful! Love this yarn!!!

I'm working on Nidden by Norah Gaugin with some silky wool that's really pretty. I've modified the length to be about 22" (6 more than the pattern calls for ) and when I'm working on it, outside, at my son's baseball game, I'm REALLY hot. For the first time, I kinda get the wierd looks when I "kip" - knit in public. But hey! when its all done, I'll have a fabulous sweater!
Thanks for another chance to win!

Lovely yarn! The weather isn't very hot in the UK at the moment. I'm currently knitting a lacy scarf and a couple of pairs of socks!

Wow, what a vibrant red!

I have been knitting baby sweaters, booties and hats since I'm due in November. But it's slowed down recently in the extreme heat. I hate when the weather messes with my knitting mojo!

I've been doing mostly toy knitting lately. Have picked up the hooded dress for my niece, and this blanket a few times when it's been cooler out. Next on my list is lace with actual lace weight yarn.

What a wonderful giveaway! I have been knitting summery cardigans for myself and small Christmas gift items for others, yes, holiday knitting already! I've got to get cracking on Back to School knitting though to have a new cardi ready for my little girl's first day of school. :)

Fantastic giveaway! I've been knitting bracelets - they're great for using up all those little leftover yarn balls!

Hi, thank you for letting us hope to win this wonderful prize. I always wanted to knit with this yarn. I knitted a slouchy hat (Felicity), a shawl with short rows that is a personal pattern and a double saroyan.

I've been knitting a lace cardigan - Laar - and some small items like mittens or a hat.
For the winter I'm thinking of Warriston, Kerrera, Aidez, ...

I've been knitting shawls so far this summer. Now I'm getting ready to switch gears-finish up some in-progress projects and start socks or mittens.

That red is fabulous. I've been fascinated by entrelac lately, but have gone back to my old standbys, hats and scarves. Most will be donated to the homeless shelters come the fall.

Stickyfingers said...

I've been working on tiny toy related things. Like toys. And clothes for dolls.
I adore gramps. I'm working on it for a wee boy currently, but it's just too hot to knit a sweater right now. That red is divine and perfect!

JoannaCos (Rav) said...

Oh man, I'd LOVE to knit a Tarty Cardi! (tee hee!)

I'm working on a cotton cardi at the moment and that gorgeous red is making me long for wooly winter knitting. This heat is the pits.

Rachel said...

It's a wet rainy winter here so I've been quite the little milliner - hats hats and more hats. Perfect for the temperature, no worries about anything getting wet if I kip as it all fits beneath my umbrella so nicely.

Unknown said...

wow wow wow! That red is gorgeous :) It reminds me of apple picking in the fall. This summer I have been working on the Calligraphy Cardigan by Hannah Fetig. I did not have the money for MTosh but went with Rowan DK tweed, It is looking super comfy. It would be great to be able to try out this very yummy looking yarn!

I recently got Debbie Bliss's "Simply Baby" book. I did the Hooded Jacket already and I'm going to do the lace-edged cardigan next. I'm planning on using them as shower gifts or saving them for when I have kids.

what a wonderful give-away. Gorgeous sweater, lovely yarn. I have been knitting shawlettes. Now a pair of socks, but I feel more shawlettes calling me. Holden, Ruffle My Feathers and Catkin so far.

Oh, my! What beautiful yarn and what a great sweater! What else can you say? Too great a prize!

I have been working on small, mostly cotton/linen blend lace facecloths and soap sacks. Quick projects, not too hot to handle (I too am in the roasting range. Today wasn't as bad - only 104F - ick). They make such great girly gifts, I may try to keep a set handy, in case of necessity.

And as soon as the weather breaks, I plan to begin Christmas knitting.

Oh that is a gorgeous red!
I've been working on lace things, simple lace shawl for a retiring receptionist, and I'm about to start my very first Niebling.

Well, it's winter over here and we have rain and cold weather a plenty. I've just finished up a scarf, am working on some socks and also spinning every evening!

Rebekah said...

I've been sticking with small projects, due to the heat and general rush of life's current.

My new scarf is finally done, and I can't wait until it cools off enough for me to wear it out and about without looking rather more humorous than I'd wish.

What an awesome offer! I am working on a cardigan for myself in lace weight yarn. It is going to be on looooong project.

I am knitting a Wispy cardigan in Malabragio lace weight. Perfect for a hot summer to work on and it will be great for cool LA evenings.

I've sort of been knitting whatever. I meant to knit summer tops, but they've all been gauge disasters, so I've settled for (knee high!) socks and scarves. It's been fun!

Vicki said...

Oooo that red is absolutely yummy! And that pattern is brilliant! Love love love cables! I've been working on socks with a superwash merino.

I absolutely love that red!!! I've been knitting socks and shawlettes/scarves. My sweater is waiting for slightly cooler weather. On top of that, our air-conditioner died and any yarn was sticking to my fingers. Glad to have the air up and running!!!

Wow! What a beautiful red.

I've been working on sweaters-all of them in fingering weight. I need to start working on hats for gifts.

I have been knitting Kate Davies' Deco cardigan, Jared Flood's Rock Island Shawl, and just cast on Citron. It's becoming known as the 'bummer summer' here in Victoria BC. Cool - still wearing sweaters every morning. Grumble.

I've mostly knit my usual shawls this summer (finished Stripe Study and am now working on Woodland Spring) and am almost done with my 1st pair of socks.

I don't have any plans to tackle a sweater anytime soon and generally don't line up my knitting queue too far in advance. I will likely knit some hats or other cold winter accessories to use up some of the smaller amounts of yarn in my stash.

This is a great giveaway. The winner will be very happy!

Holy cow! What an amazing, amazing giveaway! Madelinetosh has spoiled me for any other yarn -- it's pretty much all I want to knit with anymore.

In San Francisco, our summers aren't actually all that warm, so my knitting really doesn't change much. Right now, I'm working on a hat for my boyfriend (Jared Flood's Koolhaus) and eagerly awaiting an order of Madtosh yarn so I can dive in on a Tea Leaves Cardi for me.

Lovely pattern!

I've been working on a lace weight cardigan with 3/4 sleeves, it will be perfect when things start to cool off in another month or two.

Wowzer! What an awesome giveaway!
I've actually been knitting sweaters and thought I must be the only crazy one doing so in the height of summer (inside no-A/C house no less)!

Lizzi said...

That 'Tart' red is fab! Red is one of my favourite colours -especially when it comes to shoes! I can't resist.

I have just finished a cardigan which has turned out far too small - a lesson to me to swatch first. I have sort of lost my knitting mojo at the moment and am just playing about doing a wee blankie.

marlie said...

My summer knitting includes a shawl for me for the fall (wool/cashmere blend), and a stuffed animal for a friend's new baby (cotton).

We've just got rain here in Yorkshire, England, and I'm knitting socks. I'm trying to reduce the number of unfinished things in my knitting stash, so I'm having a finish two projects before starting another one rule. Boring, but necessary. At the moment I'm finishing some colourwork socks in red, blue and white and some Cat Bordhi socks - second sock syndrome is in evidence!

I've been sticking to baby hats for knitting, since it's been super hot here in MN. Thanks for the chance at this beautiful giveaway.
